Former HIM vocalist Ville Valo recently opened up about the possibility of reuniting with his former bandmates. He expressed his feelings about the band’s end and potential future in an interview with Louder Sound.
The Finnish musician reflected on his relationship with his former bandmates and shared his thoughts on a potential HIM reunion. This comes nearly 10 years after the goth metal band called it a day.
“I would love to play with the lads again someday,” Valo said. “But I miss those fellows. They are my brothers. But there’s also beauty in the fact we didn’t strangle each other at the end, or start traveling in separate limos.”
Valo continued to reflect on the band’s conclusion and the emotional difficulty of ending HIM.
“So there is that to be said. I felt it was the right way to bury the corpse,” he said. “Him was and is my life. It was very hard to let go of that.”
The vocalist also shared his perspective on the band’s farewell tour and how setting an end date affected their final performances.
“The bittersweet thing about it was that we were still good friends, we’d just grown apart,” Valo explained. “In regards to the farewell tour, it was nice to play when we had a finite date that it was going to end. By setting the end date first, you don’t have to have reserves. Every night felt like it was our last in a way.”
Valo remains open to a potential reunion. However, he has kept busy with his solo career since HIM’s dissolution. The band’s farewell marked the end of an era for one of Finland’s most successful metal exports.
HIM was known for Valo’s iconic heartagram symbol. The band officially disbanded after completing their farewell tour in 2017. The tour concluded with emotional final shows that marked the end of the band’s 26-year journey together. The Finnish gothic rock band had achieved significant international success throughout their career. They became one of the most recognizable acts in the genre.
Valo has successfully launched a solo career under the moniker VV since HIM’s end. Music Finland reported that he released his debut solo album Neon Noir in 2023. This was followed by an extensive world tour. The massive touring effort spanned 154 dates across multiple continents. This demonstrated Valo’s continued appeal as a performer.
The solo tour reached its climax in May 2024 when Valo performed at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall. Setlist.fm documented that this grandiose finale capped off what had been an ambitious global touring campaign for the former HIM frontman. The Royal Albert Hall performance served as a symbolic milestone in Valo’s transition from band leader to solo artist.
Valo’s solo work has allowed him to explore new musical territories. He maintains the atmospheric and emotional depth that characterized HIM’s sound. His ability to successfully transition from leading one of Finland’s biggest bands to establishing himself as a solo artist demonstrates his enduring connection with fans worldwide. The success of his solo endeavors may influence any future decisions regarding a potential HIM reunion.
