Vicky Cornell Expresses Her Suspicions After Chris Cornell’s Death

Chris Cornell’s wife, Vicky Cornell, opened up about her late husband’s suicide and how his death came off as a shock to everyone during a conversation on SiriusXM’s Gayle King in the House.

On May 17, 2017, Chris Cornell was on tour with Soundgarden, and their latest performance had taken place in Detroit. After the show, Chris left the stage and returned to his hotel room. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, yet it was the last time Cornell was seen alive. The musician was found unconscious in his hotel room at around midnight, and in the following hour, he was pronounced dead.

After Chris’s death was ruled a suicide, his family, friends, and fans were shocked, and his wife Vicky has been doing her best to keep her late husband’s memory alive. She recently got candid about her late husband’s death and how Cornell’s family was caught off guard by the tragedy. During a recent interview, Vicky Cornell shared her take on Chris’ death.

She expressed that her husband’s suicide was a sudden tragedy that struck them. Even though she knew about the musician’s mental state, Chris didn’t have a tendency toward suicide and didn’t suffer from depressive episodes. At the time, Cornell was on medication as he was trying to recover, and the incident was unexpected, adding more to the tragedy.

Vicky Cornell disclosed:

“Chris did not suffer suicidal ideation, and Chris was not even depressed. Chris was in recovery, and he had been on a benzodiazepine. But again, looking back, nothing even at that very moment felt like — it’s impossible. It came from nowhere, and so it’s a very traumatic kind of loss.”

However, this didn’t mean that Vicky wasn’t aware that something was off. The night Chris ended his life, the musician called his wife after his performance. During their conversation, Vicky realized that Chris seemed to be confused and couldn’t speak properly. She felt like he wasn’t in the right state of mind. Something was really off about his behavior, and shortly after the couple hung up the phone, Chris committed suicide.

Vicky stated:

“I do know the cause because I was on the phone with Chris, and he was in some sort of delirium the same night. He called me after the show, and I could just hear he wasn’t right. He sounded like he was high, and he was confused, his speech was slurred, and there was just something that was extremely off and evidently off. And then just, I don’t know, thirty minutes later that was it.”

Unfortunately, Chris Cornell’s unexpected passing left his family and friends shocked, but his memory continues to live through his art. He still has a big worldwide fanbase and is often commemorated by his friends and fellow musicians.
