Mark Hoppus discussed Travis Barker’s musical influence on Blink-182 in a recent interview with Q With Tom Power.

“Before Travis joined the band, Tom and I musically were trying to write the better pop punk song and trying to write better lyrics better whatever,” Hoppus said. “And Travis came in and he grew up same as me and Tom, listening to punk rock and skateboarding and growing up in that community.”

“But he also loved heavy metal and he loved rap and hiphop and he grew up playing in jazz bands and he grew up playing in drum line,” he continued. “So Travis had this entirely separate musical knowledge brought to Blink-182 that Tom and I weren’t experimenting with yet.”

“So Travis would bring in these cool Latin beats, and he would bring in these cool heavy metal beats. He’s always had this idea of bringing hip-hop beats into punk rock, and he was doing that with Blink-182,” Hoppus added. “And so we started doing that as well and just really expanded what Tom and I were trying to do musically.”

Barker’s unique approach to drumming revolutionized Blink-182’s sound after his arrival.

Research from Melodics revealed that Barker’s drumming style features intricate patterns and accents beyond typical punk rock beats. His innovative snare drum work and distinctive ride cymbal techniques set him apart.

A profile by 96FM highlighted Barker’s diverse musical influences. His inspiration came from jazz legends Steve Gadd and Buddy Rich, as well as rock drummer Stewart Copeland of The Police.

Far Out Magazine documented how Barker’s style-blending abilities transformed Blink-182’s sonic palette. He successfully merged various genres while preserving the band’s punk rock foundation.

This diverse musical background shaped Blink-182’s evolution. It also played a crucial role in their continued success and worldwide recognition in the modern rock scene.
