Tool drummer Danny Carey has given fans a new update on the band’s next album, saying the group is currently working on a lot of new material and hoping to release it in 2027.

Carey shared the update during a recent interview with Spiral Out Network. When asked what he has been doing lately, the drummer made it clear that Tool are not standing still.

“Keeping busy, you know man,” Carey said. “Working on a lot of new Tool songs right now. Hopefully, 2027, you know, that’s the goal.”

For Tool fans, even a possible release window is major news. The band’s last album, Fear Inoculum, came out in 2019. That record arrived 13 years after 10,000 Days, which was released in 2006. Because of that long history between albums, every update about new Tool music immediately gets attention.

Carey’s comments suggest that the next Tool album is not just a loose idea. The band is actively writing new songs, and 2027 appears to be the current target. Still, Carey did not give a confirmed release date, so fans will have to treat the timeline as a goal rather than a promise.

The drummer also revealed that Tool are thinking about a very ambitious way to support the next record. He said the band has been in talks about a possible residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

“We’re hoping when we release the new record, maybe do a stint at the Sphere ’cause I think we’re the perfect band for that,” Carey explained.

That idea makes sense for Tool. The band has always been known for long, atmospheric songs, detailed visuals, and immersive live shows. A venue like the Sphere, which is built around massive visual technology and a full sensory experience, could fit Tool’s style very naturally. Carey also said the band has spoken with people connected to the venue, though nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

Carey admitted that preparing a Sphere residency would not be easy. Reports noted that he described the idea as intense and expensive, explaining that a band would likely need to play several shows before making money from such a production. He also said he toured the venue and was impressed by the scale of it.

A Tool residency at the Sphere would be a major event for progressive metal. It would connect the band’s complex music with one of the most advanced live venues in the world. It would also give fans a very different kind of Tool show, built not only around sound but also around large-scale visual storytelling.

For now, the most important update is that Tool are working on new songs and aiming for 2027. After the long wait between 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum, fans know that nothing moves quickly in the Tool world.

But Carey’s latest comments offer a real sign of progress. If the band reaches its goal, 2027 could bring both a new Tool album and one of the most ambitious live projects of their career.
