Actress, model, and glam rock icon Bobbie Brown opened up about her relationship with Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee. She also discussed what really went on behind the scenes when Vince Neil left the band.
Brown was asked whether she was with Tommy Lee during the period when Mötley Crüe parted ways with Vince Neil and brought in John Corabi as the new vocalist.
“Yes. So Vince was trying to do a solo thing,” Brown said. “And Tommy really never had anything nice to say about Vince. I’m just going to say it. He never liked him. Maybe they did at some point before I ever came into the picture.”
She went on to describe the tension surrounding that period in the band’s history.
“But at this point in time, it was bitter. It was a bitter breakup, I feel like,” she added.
Brown also shared her thoughts on the new lineup and the band’s direction with Corabi.
“And they welcomed John. And John was hilarious. He was so cool, so down to earth, so fun and funny and amazing singer,” she recalled. “They just did this record with him, ‘Hooligan’s Holiday.’ And I think that was the name of it. And I went to their video shoot, and I just remember liking John.”
Brown’s account carries weight because she was one of the closest people to the band during that unstable era. She and Tommy Lee were engaged. He proposed by slipping a $15,000 engagement ring on top of a brownie she had ordered at a diner. He then dropped to his knees to ask her to marry him. The couple became one of rock’s most visible pairs throughout the mid-1990s.
The Mötley Crüe lineup change that Brown witnessed firsthand was a commercial disaster. The 1994 self-titled album with John Corabi on vocals tanked financially. The band was forced to play smaller venues after years of headlining arenas. The record’s lead single, “Hooligan’s Holiday,” failed to capture the audience that had made the band one of the biggest acts in the world.
Brown’s relationship with Lee was part of a broader chaotic period marked by substance abuse and instability. She has spoken openly about her own struggles during that time. She described the emotional toll of living inside the Mötley Crüe machine. The divorce from Warrant frontman Jani Lane had already left her wounded. The relationship with Lee placed her directly in the center of the band’s internal fractures.
Brown and Lee eventually broke up in February 1995. Just four days later, Lee married actress Pamela Anderson. Brown has said Anderson bore a striking resemblance to her. The speed of the marriage and the public nature of the relationship added another layer of pain to what had already been a painful exit.
The revelations offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at the internal dynamics of Mötley Crüe during one of the most turbulent periods in the band’s history.
