Slaughter to Prevail frontman Alex Terrible recently opened up about the origins and evolution of his signature stage masks in an interview with Loudwire.

The vocalist explained how his mask collection has grown over the years and revealed the creative process behind his iconic stage persona.

“I have a different mask for every tour. They’re similar but customized for each run. Sometimes I give them to fans afterward or hang them in my studio,” Alex Terrible said.

He went on to describe how the concept first came to life during his early twenties.

“I designed the first mask myself around age 20, when I was working at a gym making protein shakes. I drew it in my free time because I wanted something special for stage shows. I was inspired by Slipknot and the movie Spawn,” he explained.

The vocalist detailed how his initial sketch became reality and eventually expanded into a collection.

“I sent the sketch to mask makers and they brought it to life — that became the ‘Kid of Darkness’ mask. Over time, it evolved with new textures and details. We now have three main masks: Kid of Darkness, Grizzly (like on the album cover) and the Babymetal mask, which combines my original design with a traditional Japanese demon mask,” he continued.

Alex Terrible’s mask collection reflects the broader evolution of Slaughter to Prevail as a band that has carved out a distinctive identity in the deathcore scene.

The Metalverse reported that Slaughter to Prevail was formed in 2014 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The band quickly gained recognition for their intense deathcore sound that blends brutal slam elements with Alex Terrible’s signature deep guttural vocals. The band’s rise to prominence began with their debut EP Chapters of Misery in 2015, followed by their critically acclaimed album Misery Sermon in 2017.

The band’s international success came despite significant challenges. Wikipedia noted that Slaughter to Prevail toured alongside prominent metal acts like Cannibal Corpse and Whitechapel. They overcame initial visa challenges that could have hindered their global reach. Alex Terrible’s viral fame, driven by his remarkably deep vocal abilities showcased in online videos, helped propel the band to international recognition.

The use of masks in metal music carries deep cultural significance that extends beyond mere aesthetics. Loudwire explained that mask-wearing in metal music culture, pioneered by bands like Slipknot, acts as a powerful symbol and theatrical device. It enhances stage personas and connects fans with a band’s thematic vision. This practice allows artists to create distinct visual identities while maintaining an element of mystery and theatrical intensity during live performances.

The masks have become a defining element of Slaughter to Prevail’s live performances and visual identity, cementing Alex Terrible’s status as one of the most visually distinctive frontmen in modern deathcore.
