Tommy Lee recently opened up about the current dynamics within Mötley Crüe following the departure of longtime guitarist Mick Mars. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Bonnie Laufer.
The drummer discussed how the band’s relationships have evolved with age and the addition of new guitarist John 5 to their lineup.
“Well, like any good brotherhood or marriage or whatever you wanna call it, we have our moments, of course,” Lee said. “The one thing that is very exciting for us is [Mötley Crüe’s new guitarist] John 5.”
Lee emphasized the positive impact the new member has had on the band’s energy and chemistry.
“With all due respect to [original Mötley Crüe guitarist] Mick Mars, when [John 5] came in, he lit a fire under everybody,” he continued. “It was just this new energy, new fire. So I can tell you that that’s been really inspirational. And we feed off that — we all feed off that. So, we’re actually closer now than we’ve ever been.”
The addition of John 5 to Mötley Crüe represents a significant shift for the legendary rock band. It brings decades of experience from the metal and rock scene.
Ultimate Classic Rock reported that John 5, born John William Lowery, brings an impressive resume spanning stints with David Lee Roth, Marilyn Manson, and a long-term role as Rob Zombie’s guitarist and co-writer. His diverse background in both mainstream rock and industrial metal has equipped him with the versatility needed to handle Mötley Crüe’s extensive catalog.
The guitarist’s journey began early in his life. His official biography revealed that he started playing at age seven, initially inspired by the tunes of Hee Haw and Jimi Hendrix. This early start laid the foundation for what would become a prolific career spanning multiple decades and genres.
When John 5 officially joined the band in October 2022, he expressed his commitment to honoring the legacy of his predecessor. “I’m honored to carry on Mick’s legacy and am looking forward to playing these songs,” he stated upon his announcement as the new guitarist.
Guitar Player magazine noted that John 5 has battled through personal tragedy and mental health struggles throughout his career. He used music as his salvation while becoming a sought-after sidekick for major rock acts. His resilience and technical prowess have made him one of the most respected guitarists in the industry.
The comments from Tommy Lee reflect the band’s current state as they continue touring with their new lineup configuration. They suggest that the change has reinvigorated the group’s creative energy and personal relationships.
