Tobias Forge Praises Metallica’s The Thing That Should Not Be

According to Blabbermouth, Tobias Forge who’s known as the leader of Ghost recently discussed his views on Metallica’s well-known track ‘The Thing That Should Not Be‘ and said that while he enjoys it a lot, it was definitely an unusual song for the band.

As you probably know, ‘The Thing That Should Not Be’ was featured in ‘Master of Puppets’ in 1986. The song’s lyrics are based on H. P. Lovecraft’s ‘The Shadow Over Innsmouth‘ short story which was the writer’s only story released when he was alive.

The song was written by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett and is one of the heaviest tracks in Metallica’s music catalog. Recently, the band Ghost, Juanes, and Rodrigo Y Gabriela created a playlist on Apple Music to express their love and appreciation for Metallica.

While speaking about the playlist, Tobias Forge said that one of his favorite tracks is ‘The Thing That Should Not Be’ as it is not so much in line with Metallica’s sound because it is ‘different in tonality,’ definitely darker, and ‘almost more in line with death metal.’ He went on to say that this song has been a huge inspiration for him for the past three decades.

Tobias Forge shared his views using the following words:

“This is one of Metallica’s darker songs, almost more in line with death metal… Definitely not the norm if you listen to the catalog. It’s slightly different in tonality, which makes it stand out and makes it super heavy and evil. Very Lovecraftian lyrics. This song has been a huge inspiration of mine for over 30 years.”
