Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford is facing backlash from fans after posting a photo alongside actor and musician Johnny Depp, according to Instagram. Halford, known as the “Metal God,” shared the image alongside photographer Ross Halfin. The post has sparked mixed reactions among Judas Priest followers due to Depp’s controversial reputation following his highly publicized trials with ex-wife Amber Heard.
The post’s caption focused on themes of unity, friendship, and metal culture. It was the presence of Depp in the photo that drew attention.
“‘Lifers’ heavy metal ink steel throwback love family friends fans one world peace respect all, Ross Halfin,” Halford wrote in the caption.
The comment section quickly filled with reactions from fans expressing disappointment over Halford’s association with Depp.
“No, Metal God. You’re still the Metal God, but this is disappointing,” one fan wrote.
Other comments were more pointed, referencing the allegations that emerged during Depp’s legal battle with Heard.
“Oh no, not the wife beater!” another fan commented. A third fan wrote, “Unfollowing, there’s no room in my feed for abusers.”
Halford has not publicly responded to the criticism as of this report. It remains unclear whether he will address the fan backlash further.
The friendship between the two men, however, dates back further than the photo suggests. Depp’s own public standing has been shifting in recent months.
Halford and Depp’s paths crossed long before the recent Instagram post. In his memoir, Halford revealed that Depp used to attend his underground shows in the early 1980s as a “long-haired” fan, years before either man became a household name.
The two later reconnected in 2018 at an event organized by Alice Cooper. There, Depp surprised Halford by bringing up the singer’s old Fort Lauderdale hangout, the Treehouse club, a detail that stuck with Halford from their earlier encounters.
Depp’s public image has also been undergoing a notable shift. The actor was once defined largely by the fallout from his trial with Amber Heard. He is now in the midst of a career resurgence, with new film roles lined up, including Paramount’s “Ebenezer,” a dark retelling of “A Christmas Carol” set for release in November 2026, and Lionsgate’s “Day Drinker.”
That comeback narrative helps explain why Halford’s gesture of friendship struck a nerve with some fans. Many of them still associate Depp primarily with the courtroom battle rather than his renewed presence in Hollywood.
