The Who has officially responded to recent accusations made by their former drummer Zak Starkey. The statement appeared on X (formerly Twitter).
The band addressed Starkey’s claims about his departure and revealed their new drummer. Starkey had previously alleged that the band fired him and requested him to lie about his exit reasons.
“The Who are heading for retirement, whereas Zak is 20 years younger and has a great future with his new band and other exciting projects. He needs to devote all his energy into making it all a success. We both wish him all the luck in the world,” the statement read.
“Scott Devours – Who fans will know him from Roger’s solo shows – will be replacing Zak. We hope all our fans will welcome him,” Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey concluded.
The announcement signals a significant change in The Who’s lineup during their retirement phase.
Starkey’s history with the band spans a significant period. Reports from Long Beach Post revealed his eight-year tenure with The Who. During this time, he battled tendonitis that impacted his performance abilities.
Devours’ appointment builds on his existing relationship with the band. The Who’s official website documented his previous performances as Starkey’s replacement during health-related absences.
Long Beach Post highlighted a notable instance where Devours demonstrated his capabilities. He stepped in for a San Diego show with minimal notice and delivered a seamless performance.
Devours’ selection reflects his proven reliability. His extensive work with Roger Daltrey’s solo projects and successful substitute performances made him a natural choice for the position.
