The Two Facts That Prove Charlie Watts Never Felt Like A ‘Rock Star’

Charlie Watts gained international popularity and commercial success as the Rolling Stones’ talented drummer. He had a great influence on younger drummers and inspired them throughout their careers. Watts’ passion for music didn’t end until he passed away on August 24, 2021.

Even though Watts was defined as one of the best and popular drummers in the world, he never pursued a rock-star life featuring rock and roll, sex, drugs, and near-death experiences. He was different from his bandmate Mick Jagger, who is the embodiment of a rockstar.

The Reasons Why Charlie Watts Wasn’t Considered A Rockstar

Charlie Watts married Shirley Ann Shepherd on October 14, 1964, and the couple remained together until Watts’ death. Their relationship was always strong and healthy despite The Rolling Stones’ rising fame and popularity because Watts was loyal to his wife and never cheated on Shirley Ann with the groupies.

Therefore, Watts’s decision about the groupies was described as unusual for a famous musician like him. In addition, when the Rolling Stones members were invited to the Playboy Mansion during their 1972 American Tour, Watts didn’t spend time with Playboy girls, and he wanted to go to Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner’s game room.

In Watts words, he said:

I’ve never filled the stereotype of the rock star.

Consequently, it seems like Watts decided to live his life as an ordinary man who had a happy marriage and lovely kids, even though he was one of the most famous drummers in the world. In one of his previous interviews with Rolling Stone Magazine, Charlie Watts also revealed that he never filled the rock star stereotype and didn’t consider himself one of them.
