The Reason Why Keith Richards And Elton John Hate Each Other
There’s no doubt that both Elton John and the Rolling Stones lead guitarist Keith Richards have outstanding and admirable music careers. While John is one of the best-selling music artists of all time as well as being one of the most awarded musicians of all time, Richards is often regarded as one of the greatest guitar players in music history.
However, these extraordinary music careers that span over many decades aren’t the only assets of the two legendary musicians as it’s fair to say that they both don’t necessarily like each other. Elton John and Keith Richards expressed how much they dislike one another on numerous occasions and apparently the feeling is mutual. The never-ending feud between the two has its highlights including insults and we’re here to bring the details of the story.
Keith Richards Won’t Miss Elton John When He Retires
The verbal feud between the British musicians first started when the Rolling Stones guitarist referred to Elton John as a ‘lovely bloke, but posing’ in 1988. A few years later, Keith Richards lived up to his reputation by completely criticizing every work the Rocketman has ever done including his Marilyn Monroe tribute ‘Candle in the Wind’ which was also his rewrite in Princess Diana’s memory as ‘Songs for Dead Blondes.’
During an interview with Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper back in 2018, Richards stated that he will not be missing Elton John when the singer retires from performing after his ongoing farewell tour concludes. Being the outspoken musician that he has always been, Richards took his comments further by revealing that John’s departure from the music industry means more room for his band, a statement revealed apparently after Richards thought the humor element was absent from his comments.
Elton John Called Keith Richards ‘A Monkey With Arthritis’
Being tired of Keith Richards’ endless verbal attack, Elton John soon fired back at the Rolling Stones guitarist, especially after the guitarist criticized his work for re-recording his 1973 tribute to Marilyn Monroe, ‘Candle in the Wind,’ in memory of Princess Diana.
During an interview with the New York Daily News, Elton John opened up about his opinions on Keith Richards and started his word by saying that he’s glad he is living a sober life now. However, the rest of his statement wasn’t exactly as kind since John referred to the Rolling Stones’ icon as ‘a monkey with arthritis’ which could’ve been his ending as well.
In addition to this, Elton John stated that he admired and has a great amount of respect for the Rolling Stones, however, the band would be better off if they fired Keith Richards a decade ago. The musician concluded his words by saying that Richards is a straight-up a-hole and he’s fed up with the guitarist’s actions.
Elton John’s statement follows:
“I’m glad I’ve given up drugs and alcohol. It would be awful to be like Keith Richards. He’s pathetic, poor thing. It’s like a monkey with arthritis, trying to go on stage and look young. I have great respect for the Stones but they would have been better if they had thrown Keith out 15 years ago…I just think he’s an a-hole and I have for a long time.”
Considering the fact that both Elton John and the Rolling Stones had a musical rivalry back in the day and the personal attitude Keith Richards has for many other musicians, both sides most likely wouldn’t be best friends at the end of the day. However, it’s always sad to see two legendary artists throw hurtful comments about one another during interviews, especially if it’s about their work and physical appearance.
