The Reason Scott Weiland Had Deep Financial Troubles When He Died

Scott Weiland achieved fame as a member of Stone Temple Pilots and the supergroup Velvet Revolver. He also focused on his solo career and collaborations with other significant musicians. As a successful singer, he was chosen number 57 by the magazine Hit Parader in the Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists list. Weiland’s chaotic stage persona and vocal styles impacted the rock scene.

Unfortunately, the rocker was found dead because of an accidental drug overdose during the tour with The Wildabouts in 2015. Many musicians, especially Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver members, expressed their sadness about their loss. After the death of Weiland, many talked about the several financial troubles he had had. Especially Weiland’s wife Jamie mentioned the debts he left.

Why Did Scott Weiland Have Financial Troubles?

As reported by The Blast, Scott Weiland was confronted with a tax lien before the tax deadline came. The site stated that between 2012 and 2014, Weiland did not pay the federal income tax and had almost $1 million in debts. The family has been dealing with the debt since his death. They were faced with paying off the debts with the possessions of the rocker, such as Grammy awards, AMA, and valuable items he gained.

As The Blast reported:

“One week before the tax deadline, the IRS filed a huge tax lien against the rockstar, who died in 2015. According to the documents obtained by The Blast, Weiland did not pay his federal income tax from 2012 to 2014 and owed $818,569.62.”

In a 2016 interview with Classic Rock, Jamie Wachtel Weiland said she did not expect anything to take from Scott’s 2-million-worth estate. As Jamie stated, she did not have much money left from Scott as people thought because the rocker passed away, leaving substantial debts. She expressed the hardships she faced while dealing with all these debts.

Jamie Weiland explained in her words:

“I think there’s this preconceived notion that Scott, being a rock star, must have just had millions in the bank and that I’m probably just sitting pretty and just collecting money, and it’s the antithesis of the truth. He, unfortunately, passed away with an enormous amount of debt. There were a lot of loose ends that were never dealt with.

I could have fought a lot more to be involved in the mess that was left behind, but the truth is, for a long time, I was completely paralyzed. I was incapable of doing anything. It was hard for me to just get through the day, much less lawyer up and deal with all the legalities of an estate and probate.”

Since Scott Weiland did not pay the taxes, he was responsible for financial troubles even after his death. His family was confronted with discarding valuable possessions like awards to pay the debts. Also, it was a complicated process for Jamie Weiland, as she stated in the past.
