The Pretty Reckless singer Taylor Momsen recently shared an emotional tribute to her former Gossip Girl co-star Michelle Trachtenberg, who passed away at 39 in 2025 due to complications of diabetes after undergoing a liver transplant. The heartbreaking message was posted on Instagram.
Momsen’s tribute reflected on the profound impact of grief and how memories can unexpectedly surface, particularly on significant dates.
“It’s weird how the body clock remembers,” Momsen said. “Last night I was sitting in my hotel room alone in São Paulo, I didn’t know what the date was (they all blend together on tour) and I was hit with an overwhelming sadness over Michelle…then I wake up and realize it’s been a year without her.”
The singer continued to express her ongoing struggle with the loss.
“Life is hard,” she said. “I wish…I miss…I wish…”
The tribute came exactly one year after Trachtenberg’s passing, highlighting how grief can manifest even when we’re not consciously aware of significant dates.
Trachtenberg’s role as the scheming Georgina Sparks became one of her most memorable performances in later years. Gossip Girl Wiki reported that she played the manipulative character from 2008 to 2012, appearing in nearly every episode of the final season six. Her portrayal of the cunning socialite who constantly stirred up drama in the Upper East Side made her a fan favorite despite being an antagonist.
The actress had a deep connection to the character that defined much of her later career. In a 2010 interview, Trachtenberg called Georgina “one of the best characters I’ve ever played,” vowing never to stop returning to the role. This dedication to the character was evident when she reprised her role in the HBO revival series.
Wikipedia noted that Trachtenberg returned to the Gossip Girl universe in 2022, reprising her role as Georgina Sparks in the second season of the HBO revival. This comeback demonstrated her enduring connection to the franchise that had become such a significant part of her acting legacy.
Before her Gossip Girl fame, Trachtenberg had already established herself as a talented young actress. Wikipedia documented that she rose to prominence playing Dawn Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 2000 to 2003, earning three Saturn Award nominations for her performance as Buffy’s mystical sister.
