The Only Beatles Song Recorded Without Paul McCartney
The Beatles is regarded as the most influential band of all time with their contributions to developing 1960s counterculture, popular music, songwriting, recording, and artistic presentation. John Lennon and McCartney’s songwriting partnership led the band throughout the years. So, their contributions were pivotal to the Beatles’ success.
Although the Fab Four were enjoying tremendous success for years, their manager Brian Epstein’s passing in 1967, Paul McCartney’s authoritarian attitude in the band, and the conflicts on the band’s future path ended up causing the Beatles to split in 1969. Apart from these issues, there were also minor conflicts within the band. They once even recorded a song without Paul McCartney‘s contribution due to problems between them.
Which Beatles Song Came Out In Paul McCartney’s Absence?
In late August 1965, the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein rented them a house in Beverly Hills, California. John Lennon and George Harrison took LSD in March of that year and wanted Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to join them in their use. Due to the psychedelic influence of the drug, Harrison and Lennon couldn’t relate to McCartney and Starr creatively.
Ringo Starr agreed to take the drug, but McCartney refused. Following that, Harrison and Lennon continued experimenting with LSD, and the Beatles began to work on their seventh album ‘Revolver.’ There was remarkable creative cooperation within the band during that period. Still, McCartney refused to partake during the recordings of the song ‘She Said She Said.’
Many sources argue that the main reason behind McCartney’s refusal is that he didn’t want to take LSD, unlike his bandmates. As a result, their perception and creative approach were quite different. Although McCartney participated in the early recordings of ‘She Said She Said,’ he didn’t contribute to the finished recording. Instead, Harrison played the bass on the song.
The recording sessions of ‘She Said She Said’ was completed within a single session, making it the only ‘Revolver’ song to be finished in such a short period. According to BeatlesBible.com, McCartney said he had an issue with his bandmates during the recordings, and they recorded the song without him. So, Harrison ended up playing the bass instead of McCartney.
As reported by BeatlesBible, Paul McCartney said the following:
“I like the title ‘She Said She Said,’ which I think was made up during the session. John brought it in pretty much finished, I think. I’m not sure, but I think it was one of the only Beatles records I never played on. I think we’d had a barney or something, and I said, ‘Oh, f*ck you!’ and they said, ‘Well, we’ll do it.’ I think George played bass.”
Ultimately, ‘She Said She Said’ became the only song Paul McCartney never contributed to its recordings. On the other hand, there was also an instance where Macca replaced George Harrison and played bass.
