When Stevie Nicks decided that forming a duo with her boyfriend, Lindsey Buckingham, was the best call to take their relationship to the next level, she probably didn’t expect things to go downhill, as we know they did. The couple released an eponymous debut with Nicks and Buckingham appearing semi-nude on the album’s cover. However, young Stevie wasn’t pleased with that.
It probably wasn’t the best call for Stevie to get semi-naked for a picture at the time, as her father wasn’t pleased with the cover; and Nicks almost quit music. As it turns out, it was Lindsey who forced her to take the semi-nude photo with him and allegedly shouted at her when she hesitated. The bullying Stevie suffered from would continue even after the duo was invited to Fleetwood Mac.
However, Christine McVie ultimately noticed Lindsey’s abusive behavior and felt the need to speak up. She even slapped the guitarist in the face after a particular show where Buckingham threw his guitar at Stevie’s head while performing and tried to embarrass her by trying to make her fall.
So, the bond between Stevie and Christine formed naturally with their shared interest in music and maybe, McVie realizing Nicks’s struggle with Lindsey and helping her out as a bandmate and friend. So, after years of supporting one another, Stevie Nicks couldn’t think of a Fleetwood Mac without Christine when the band reunited in 2013.
However, there was a problem with the reunion; Christine McVie didn’t want to participate. Still, Nicks also knew that she needed Christine, and the singer was ready to do whatever it took to reunite with her. When Stevie discussed whether Christine would be with her bandmates for future shows with the Guardian in 2013, the rock legend also disclosed her offer to McVie.
“We all did everything we could to try and talk her out of it,” Nicks said and continued, “but you look in someone’s eyes, and you can tell they’re finished. It’s like when somebody breaks up with you and says, ‘We’re done.’ As Taylor Swift would say, ‘We are never ever getting back together, ever!’ That’s what Chris was saying.”
Then, Stevie became even more poetic after the Taylor Swift reference as she disclosed she would do whatever it took to reunite with McVie. Nicks confessed, “I’d beg, borrow and scrape together $5 million and give it to her in cash if she returned. That’s how much I miss her. I miss her like flowers need the rain.”
Well, Stevie Nicks was in luck as the keyboardist reunited with her bandmates almost a year after Stevie’s statements. She initially appeared in a couple of performances but then announced her official return. So, we don’t know if Christine McVie accepted Stevie’s offer and took the $5 million the singer promised or if Nicks’s lovely statements made her realize she wanted to reunite with her bandmates and friends.
