On August 19, 1969, a rocker became the first person known to swear on live television.

While no celebrity or musician can drop the F-bomb during live television, it has become more accustomed to doing so recently. Still, it can lead to you not getting invited to the show, whether the word was said by accident or not.

A few might think that it was the Sex Pistols who first swore on TV during their appearance on Today Show in 1976 with the following words:

“You dirty f*cker! What a f*cking rotter!”

Well, the Pistols are not the first to cause outrage for swearing. The first rocker who is known to swear for the first time is no other than Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane.

Slick made an appearance on the Dick Cavett Show just a day after Woodstock and became the first rocker to say ‘motherf*cker’ during the band’s performance of ‘We Can Be Together.’

Because the show was taped, there was enough time to bleep the word, though it’s unclear whether the words made it on air. It was also acknowledged that it was the first time the F-bomb was dropped live in the description of the episode from the archives:

“Jefferson Airplane’s performance of ‘We Can Be Together’ marked the first time the word ‘f*ck’ was uttered on live television.”

Below, you can watch the whole performance.
