In a new episode of the Sodajerker on Songwriting podcast, The Edge hinted at new U2 music coming soon.
The guitarist shared that U2 was “working on a lot of new songs” and “having a great time.” He added, “There might be a new song happening very soon, which you’ll hear about. Can’t say any more than that. We’re in a great place creatively.”
U2 has been working on their new album right now. In November, The Edge talked with Rolling Stone about the upcoming record. He hinted that it will sound different but won’t be too rock-heavy.
The rocker explained, “I guess we’re at that great honeymoon period of a lot of experimentation, and looking at all kinds of possible themes musically. I think the guitar will be a big part of the next record, but I don’t think it’s going to be a heavy-rock album. I think it’s going to be a very different kind of use of the guitar, not a straight-up rock thing.”
“We’ve always tried to avoid using the instrument in a way that’s too mainstream and kind of normal. We’ve always tried to find ways to use the guitar that has never been heard before, and it seems that that’s an important part of what gets us excited,” he further shared.
U2 frontman Bono previously said the opposite about the new album, calling it ‘an unreasonable guitar record’ with ‘big choruses.’ “I don’t think the world is waiting on the next U2 album,” his statements to Mojo read back then.
The singer added, “I think we have to give them a reason to be interested in it. I just want to write great tunes, because that’s where U2 started – with big choruses, clear ideas. And let’s go back there, but do it with some petrol and some matches.”
U2’s latest album of original new material, ‘Songs of Experience,’ was released on December 1, 2017.
