Testament frontman Chuck Billy shocked fans by posting videos of his new short haircut on social media, explaining that he wanted a fresh start after wearing long hair for almost his entire life. He shared the transformation on Instagram.
Billy documented the change across multiple videos. In the first clip, he filmed himself getting the haircut and explained his decision to make the change after decades of keeping his hair long.
“All right. Here I am getting a haircut. I’ve had long hair my whole life except for when I was ill with cancer. But today, I think, is the day. It’s gonna be a new look. So here we go,” Billy said.
In a follow-up video, he showed off the finished result and asked how the new look suited him.
“All right, well… here it is. The new Chuck. 2026, starting fresh and new. I don’t know, do I look more grown up now? I don’t know. Feel pretty good, feel a little lighter,” he said.
Billy then posted a third video to reveal what inspired him to take the plunge.
“Hey, what’s going on everybody? You got the news today of my new haircut. I just wanted to tell you the reason and the inspiration behind it. I seen Jerry Cantrell post two days ago I believe with his haircut, and it gave me the strength and energy and the nerve to cut it all off. So thank you Jerry, this one’s to you man. Thanks for the courage. Cheers,” Billy said.
Fans quickly responded to the transformation with humorous comments. Some jokingly compared his new appearance to political figures, while others playfully warned him about the risks of drastic image changes. “Welcome Back Hugo Chavez,” some wrote.
The Testament frontman’s dramatic makeover sparked conversation among his followers about the decision to change his look after so many years.
Billy had shaved his head in the past during his battle with cancer. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2001 and underwent chemotherapy before being declared cancer-free in 2002. He also incorporated traditional Native American healing practices into his recovery during that time.
Jerry Cantrell, the frontman of Alice in Chains, was spotted with his new short haircut backstage at an Aerosmith & Friends concert at the Hollywood Bowl on October 30, 2026. Cantrell’s closely-cropped style was similar to his appearance during the promotion of Alice in Chains’ album The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here around 2011 and 2013.
Testament released their latest album, Para Bellum, on October 10, 2025 through Nuclear Blast. The band performed on their Thrash Of The Titans world tour with fellow thrash metal bands Overkill and Destruction, which ran from March 14 to April 10, 2026, beginning in Portland, Oregon and concluding in Berkeley, California.
Billy has been working on material for Testament’s future output. In a recent interview, Billy revealed that guitarist Eric Peterson and Chris Dovas have been writing songs for the band’s next record. Additionally, Billy’s memoir Holding My Breath: The Two Testaments Of Chuck Billy is set to be released on November 10, 2026 via Permuted Press.
