In May, Ted Nugent’s scheduled concert at Avondale Brewing Company in Birmingham, Alabama met with backlash and got canceled. The backlash at the time was due to Nugent’s tweet, stating that he doesn’t believe in transgenders:
“There is no such thing as transgender. You cannot change your gender. Comfortably numb is actually uncomfortably dumb. Debate me but bring your bib.”
Nugent talked about this and how he immediately found a new venue in Brandon, Mississippi, in his podcast ‘The Nightly Nuge.’ He set the scene as:
“I’ve been screaming like an idiot for the last 58 years. Because I wore my voice off for a couple nights, Johnny Big and bass guitar sang ‘Stranglehold,’ ‘Hey Baby,’ ‘Need You Bad,’ and ‘Stormtroopin’.’ How about Johnny Big’s voice, he nailed it. So I’m having the musical time of my life, but yes there is a heartfelt battlecry that is resounding across the hinterland.”
Ted continued by telling how the backlash he received resulted in the venue canceling, yet he found another one and booked it, and this is a middle finger towards people who thought his transphobic comments were wrong.
“It’s an interesting cultural anomaly or maybe clusterfuck, that I was canceled from the Birmingham concert because three genders confused Michael Moore fanclub protested. So we booked another show the same night in Brandon, Mississippi, for more money with more people, more piss and more vinegar… So yes, there is a coalescing of spirit in middle finger attitude that we’re playing tonight in Brandon, Mississippi.”
Michael Moore explained his thoughts on Nugent in 2012 and retold a story he heard at the time:
“So the Secret Service was partying with Ted Nugent, and he takes their guns from them, and he [says] he had some bowling pins as targets. And he goes, ‘We’re just going to pretend that’s Michael Moore down there, and I’m going to blow him up,’ and he fires the gun. The guy’s a sick guy. I don’t know what to say.”
