Ted Nugent recently shared his controversial opinions about Joan Jett and her potential Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. He made provocative comments during an appearance on The Adam Carolla Show.

The rock guitarist expressed his support for Jett’s musical abilities while also making personal remarks about her. During the interview, Nugent discussed both her qualifications for the Hall of Fame and his personal views about her as a musician.

“I know you like shocks in life. I’m gonna shock you, because I think Joan Jett should be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame just because of her music,” Nugent said. “But not yet, because you have to get Styx in first, you have to get Night Ranger in first, you have to get Triumph. Triumph should be [in there]. I can name a hundred [deserving] bands [that aren’t in there].”

Nugent then recounted a previous interview where he made more personal comments about Jett.

“I’ll never forget — somebody brought up during an interview, they said we saw the Rolling Stone list of top 100 guitar players, Ted, and what do you think that Joan Jett is in there? And I go — it’s on tape — I said, ‘I love Joan Jett.’ She’s a garage-band, dirty, nasty, uppity… She’s my favorite lesbian,” he continued. “And some of my greatest memories include lesbians.”

The musician concluded by clarifying his assessment of Jett’s guitar skills specifically.

“The point is, is that she’s not in the top 100 guitar player list because I’ve got a hundred guitar players that are really virtuosos and adventurous… [Joan] plays a great rhythm guitar,” Nugent said.

Nugent’s comments come more than a decade after Joan Jett already achieved the recognition he suggested she deserved. His remarks reflect his ongoing pattern of provocative statements about fellow musicians and public figures.

Joan Jett was actually inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 as part of The Blackhearts. The induction recognized her pioneering role in rock music. The ceremony took place on April 18, 2015, at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. It highlighted her contributions as both a solo artist and leader of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Her career achievements include co-founding The Runaways from 1975 to 1979. She launched a successful solo career with hits like “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. She has produced over 15 studio albums throughout her career.

Jett’s guitar work has earned recognition from major music publications. Guitar World and Rolling Stone named her among the top female rock guitarists for her rhythm-driven, high-energy riffs. Her raw, aggressive guitar style broke significant gender barriers in rock music. It blended punk, glam, and hard rock influences that influenced countless musicians who followed.

Nugent’s controversial statements about musicians and public figures have been a consistent pattern throughout his career. Classical Music reported that Nugent has long blurred the line between performance and political rally. This included a notorious 2007 onstage tirade where he brandished assault rifles and screamed obscenities at political figures, which alienated some fans.

The guitarist has also faced criticism for lyrics in his song “Jailbait.” The song explicitly references pursuing a 13-year-old girl, drawing accusations of promoting child exploitation despite defenders framing it as artistic provocation. St. Augustine University noted that Nugent is known as a cultural provocateur whose rhetoric often targets political figures. His overall pattern includes mixing rock rebellion with controversial commentary that extends beyond music into broader cultural and political discussions.
