Symphonic metal vocalist Amanda Somerville, known for her work with acts such as Epica, Kamelot, Ayreon and Avantasia, has been diagnosed with a malignant and aggressive brain tumor. The news was shared on Instagram by her husband, After Forever founder and guitarist Sander Gommans.
Gommans used the post to inform fans of the diagnosis and to describe the emotional toll it has taken on their family. He also thanked those who have offered support.
“Unfortunately, I have some very sad news to share,” Sander Gommans wrote. “The love of my life, mother of my three daughters and my beautiful wife Amanda Somerville, has a malignant and aggressive brain tumor. We’re shocked, devastated and I can’t describe the challenges we’re facing as a family right now.”
“We’re very grateful with the help we’re getting from family and friends,” he continued. “Positive thoughts help, prayers help, keeping us in your minds help.”
“Please be there for Amanda and our kids and have us in your minds,” Gommans added. “Feel free to share this message in a respectful way. Amanda gives so much to all of us…love, music, friendship, strength….it’s time to send out hope and power to her. Thanks, it means a lot to us.”
Somerville’s decades-long career in Europe’s symphonic and melodic metal scene has made her a beloved figure far beyond her collaborations with Epica, Kamelot, Ayreon and Avantasia.
The American-born singer, songwriter and vocal coach relocated from Michigan to Germany in 1999. There, she built her professional home and established herself as one of the genre’s most sought-after vocalists. Her reach within the symphonic metal community runs deep. In 2008, she stepped in for Simone Simons during Epica’s North American tour with Symphony X, further cementing her ties to the band and its fanbase.
Somerville has also lent her talents to bands like Trillium and the Kiske/Somerville project, beyond her guest appearances with Kamelot and Avantasia, where she has long been part of the network of collaborators shaping Tobias Sammet’s metal-opera project. Her versatility as a performer extends outside the metal world too. She has toured alongside artists such as Alice Cooper and Ian Gillan.
Somerville’s influence on the scene isn’t limited to her own recordings. She has built a respected reputation as a vocal coach and studio collaborator. She has mentored and worked alongside countless singers in the symphonic and melodic metal community, a role that has made her almost as influential behind the scenes as she is on stage.
