Stryper’s Michael Sweet recently opened up about how his cancer diagnosis has transformed his perspective on life and faith. He shared his experience in an interview with Christian Music Guys.
The heavy metal vocalist discussed the profound impact his thyroid cancer diagnosis has had on his priorities and spiritual outlook. When asked about what God has been doing in his life recently that could help build viewers’ and listeners’ faith, Sweet provided a deeply personal response.
“Well, look, I tell you, I’ve been going through some health issues. I think most people know that. I’m just kind of putting everything in God’s hands. And one thing that it’s taught me is how to do just that,” Sweet said.
The musician went on to explain how the diagnosis forced him to confront his own mortality in ways he hadn’t previously considered.
“And I found that until I was diagnosed, you know, I have thyroid cancer, so I’m they’re keeping an eye on everything and, you know, I’m doing fine at the moment. But until I was diagnosed, I didn’t really think much about uh my mortality or, you know, the ever after, just being honest. But then the minute you’re faced with something like that, you do think about that,” he continued.
Sweet emphasized that this experience has led to a fundamental shift in how he approaches life’s priorities.
“And that’s something we all better think about because we’re all going to face it. And what it did in my mind, in my heart, is made me want to change my perspective and my priorities on life and try to put what’s important at the top of the list and what’s not important at the bottom of the list. That’s easier said than done, but if you can do that, you’re going to be a lot better off by doing so,” Sweet explained. “And I think that’s something that my diagnosis has helped me somewhat to do that. And I’m very happy about that.”
Sweet’s health journey has been more complex than initially revealed. The diagnosis stemmed from vocal changes he experienced over the past decade.
SurvivorNet reported that the 62-year-old frontman noticed persistent vocal changes that led to a biopsy confirming a malignant nodule in his right thyroid lobe. The diagnosis revealed papillary thyroid cancer, the most common type of thyroid cancer.
This recent diagnosis follows a previous medical intervention. Blunt Magazine noted that Sweet underwent a partial thyroidectomy in 2023 to remove the left side of his thyroid. His doctors are now recommending active surveillance on the remaining nodule before considering potential further surgery.
Despite the health challenges, Sweet and Stryper remain committed to their musical endeavors. Blunt Magazine confirmed that the band plans to record their new album starting December 28, 2025. They are staying on schedule despite Sweet’s ongoing health concerns.
The timing of Sweet’s openness about his diagnosis coincides with his doctors’ optimistic outlook. Medical professionals believe the cancer will soon be behind him as he prepares for the next phase of treatment. This will allow him to continue his musical career while managing his health priorities.
