Stryper frontman Michael Sweet recently opened up about why he has never gotten a tattoo despite spending his entire life as a rock star. He also hinted that he may now be reconsidering.
Sweet explained that his decision has always come down to a personal resistance to following trends. “The Sweet brothers never got any tattoos. Why? Personally, I don’t like trends. I don’t like to follow what’s popular and what everyone else does. It seems that everybody has tattoos now,” Sweet said. “Now that I’m a little older (and at this point in time it wouldn’t really be following a trend), maybe it’s time. If I could find the right artist and make the right statement, and if all the planets aligned and we could sit through the ordeal, then maybe The Sweet brothers could become The Ink Brothers.”
Sweet went on to elaborate on the deeper reasoning behind his stance. He touched on both peer pressure and the personal significance he would want any tattoo to carry.
“I can only speak for myself personally, but it was based on not following trends. Everyone around me was getting tattoos and now literally every person I know has tattoos. And I never wanted to get a tattoo based on that. Because everyone has them,” he continued. “Also, I am a fairly deep person, and I would want them to have deep meaning. I wouldn’t want to just do something silly like a Superman tattoo on my arm or a pirate tattoo on my leg.”
“I would want it to be very thought out and very original and very artistic and have a deep meaning to me before I did anything or even considered it,” Sweet added. “But I just don’t cave in into peer pressure. And that goes for clothing style, that goes for what kind of cologne I wear, that goes to what kind of equipment I use or play, you name it. I just don’t follow trends. I like to use and do what everyone else doesn’t use or do. It just kind of how I am.”
Sweet’s comments offer a rare glimpse into the personal philosophy of the longtime Stryper frontman. His refusal to conform extends well beyond fashion choices and into the very foundation of how Stryper was built and how it has endured for decades. He remains open to the idea of getting inked — but only on his own terms.
Stryper was formed in the early 1980s in Orange County, California. The band quickly became one of the first Christian rock bands to achieve genuine mainstream success. They built their identity around blending heavy metal with overtly Christian lyrics — a combination that was considered unconventional at the time and drew both devoted fans and sharp criticism from secular and religious communities alike.
The band became widely recognized for its distinctive yellow-and-black “stripe” imagery and for throwing Bibles into the audience during live performances. That practice became one of the most iconic gestures in Christian rock history. Albums such as Soldiers Under Command (1985), To Hell with the Devil (1986), and In God We Trust (1988) were commercially successful and helped cement Stryper’s place as a major force in the Christian metal scene.
Beyond his work with Stryper, Sweet has maintained an active solo career. He has released multiple albums ranging from hard rock to more introspective, acoustic-oriented material. He has also taken part in various collaborations and side projects within both the Christian and mainstream rock worlds.
Throughout his career, Sweet has repeatedly emphasized that his personal philosophy is grounded in faith, integrity, and a commitment to staying true to his beliefs regardless of outside pressure. That same conviction — the refusal to do something simply because everyone else is doing it — appears to be as central to his identity today as it was when Stryper first took the stage more than four decades ago.
