Michael Sweet, the frontman of legendary rock band Stryper, recently commented on the prevalence of negative criticism targeting established musicians. He shared his thoughts on Facebook.

Sweet addressed what he perceives as an issue with online content creators who analyze and critique successful musicians without having achieved comparable success themselves.

“What is the deal with all these videos on YouTube analyzing (often negatively and disrespectfully) other singers who have been successful and have accomplished so much?” Sweet asked. “We live in very strange days. Anyone can make a video and tear apart a singer, a guitarist, a drummer yet these singers, guitarists and drummers have made it! So what does it matter? They’ve already proven the naysayers wrong, have they not? They made it!”

Sweet emphasized that many of these critics have not reached the professional level of those they critique. He attributes their behavior to negative emotions.

“And oddly enough, most of the videos are done by people who haven’t, or at least not at the level of the ones they’re baggin’ on. And most likely never will. Jealousy and envy are ugly. Absolutely mind blowing,” he concluded.

Sweet’s recent comments reflect a broader pattern of criticism that Stryper has endured throughout their career. The band’s unique position in the rock and metal landscape has made them a frequent target of both skepticism and outright hostility from various corners of the music community.

Metal Sucks reported that Sweet has previously addressed criticism of the band on social media and in interviews. He acknowledged that some people simply “love to hate” Stryper. However, he suggested that the root cause of much of the negative reaction runs deeper than simple jealousy or envy.

Sweet has concluded that much of the criticism stems from a more fundamental issue. Metal Injection documented that Sweet believes “the hate for this band stems from hatred for God.” He describes this as “deep, sad, pathetic, shallow, and pointless.” Sweet views Stryper’s unique position as a Christian band in the heavy metal scene as having led to criticism from both secular and religious communities alike.

Despite the ongoing backlash, Sweet maintains that Stryper has “nothing to prove” and has “broken all boundaries, all rules, and all stats.” He feels this only intensifies the criticism from detractors. Ultimate Metal noted that Sweet emphasizes music is in his family’s “blood” and “DNA.” Stryper has a unique sound and style that has set them apart throughout their career.

The band’s journey reflects a broader reality. Stryper has never been fully accepted by either the mainstream rock and metal community or the Christian music scene. They have often become the target of mockery from both sides. Sweet’s recent comments about YouTube critics appear to be part of a larger conversation he has been having about the nature of criticism, success, and the motivations behind those who seek to tear down established artists.
