Soundgarden failed to appear at Black Sabbath’s final “Back to the Beginning” concert on July 5th. Sharon Osbourne had announced months earlier that the band would be part of the lineup alongside Steven Tyler. Tyler performed at the show, but Soundgarden’s absence left fans disappointed and sparked discussion on Reddit.

Fans on the Soundgarden subreddit shared their theories about why the band didn’t perform. Many expressed frustration over the lack of communication.

“I literally bought a ticket, honestly just ‘cuz I thought I’d be seeing one of the very few Soundgarden reunions,” one fan wrote. “I am so vastly disappointed and heartbroken right now. And even more angry at the fact that that information was withheld from us. They were probably who Sharon was bragging about kicking off, and it was probably because you know who wanted money.”

Another fan offered a different perspective on potential legal complications surrounding the band’s name.

“It’s likely that Vicky (Chris Cornell’s widow) won’t let them use the name ‘Soundgarden’ unless the band members pay her money,” they wrote. “So far, apart from the 2019 tribute show, they have never used the band name ‘Soundgarden.’ They have only used their anagram ‘Nudedragons’ for playing in a couple of tribute shows, and it was never for money – all proceeds went to charity.”

Some fans expressed disappointment that individual members didn’t participate in other ways.

“I wish they had still gone and joined one of the super group lineups even if legal issues prevented them from performing together as Soundgarden,” another fan commented. “Kim or Matt at least.”

The band’s absence remains unexplained. This leaves fans to speculate about the circumstances behind their withdrawal from the historic farewell show.

The situation becomes clearer when viewed against the backdrop of recent developments surrounding the farewell concert and Soundgarden’s ongoing legal complexities.

Alternative Nation reported that Sharon Osbourne revealed she had to remove a well-known band from the lineup after a dispute with their manager. She did not specify which band. She described the situation as causing her great distress, stating it was “the worst way I’ve felt in years” due to the fallout with the manager. She ruled out Iron Maiden, who missed the event due to scheduling conflicts. Fans speculate that Soundgarden’s removal stemmed from managerial disputes rather than the legal issues surrounding the band name.

The planned appearance would have marked a significant moment for both bands. Pearl Jam Online noted that Soundgarden was initially slated to perform as a tribute to Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne. This emphasized the mutual respect between two giants in heavy music. The three surviving members had been confirmed to join the lineup as a sign of respect for the farewell event taking place in Birmingham, the birthplace of Black Sabbath.

The absence is particularly notable given Soundgarden’s limited public appearances since Chris Cornell’s death in 2017. Exposed Vocals highlighted that the band’s participation would have represented a rare reunion opportunity. This made their withdrawal all the more disappointing for fans who had purchased tickets specifically to witness this historic collaboration.

The controversy highlights the ongoing challenges facing legacy bands when dealing with both business disputes and legal complications surrounding band names and estates. This leaves fans caught in the middle of industry politics.
