Slipknot’s Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan has cleared his Instagram account. He left only a single video post featuring a death mask, sparking widespread speculation among fans on Reddit about the meaning behind this dramatic social media move.
The mysterious action has prompted extensive discussion among Slipknot fans. They have shared various theories about what Crahan’s decision might signify for the band’s future.
“I think it’s to do with the end of the roadrunner period,” one fan wrote on Reddit about Clown’s only Instagram post. “They played their last live show last night, and ending that period. I’d say he’s referencing to that era of Slipknot/Roadrunner is now ‘Dead’ and being taken away by the new Shawn Crahan.”
Other fans have speculated about more significant changes within the band structure.
“Sometimes I do wonder if Clown’s departure from the band as a performer is imminent especially because it’s been on multiple occasions where he’s had to step down this year due to family-related causes,” another fan commented. “And that recent fan documentary kinda reminded me how he feels about doing what’s right for the band or his family.”
Some fans offered a more optimistic interpretation of the social media cleanup.
“Maybe it’s just the end of this cycle,” another fan wrote. “The 25th anniversary attire, this line of touring, etc. The new release of the self titled will come out but the band itself is now moving on.”
Crahan has stepped back from performing with Slipknot on multiple occasions this year due to family matters. The band recently concluded their touring cycle, adding fuel to fan speculation about potential changes ahead.
The timing of Crahan’s social media purge coincides with a significant transitional period for Slipknot. The band navigates both contractual and creative changes that could reshape their future direction.
Louder Sound reported that The End, So Far marked Slipknot’s final album under their longtime Roadrunner Records contract. The album fulfilled a seven-album deal that began in 1998. This contractual conclusion gives the band unprecedented freedom to explore new business arrangements and creative directions moving forward.
The band’s recent 25th anniversary touring cycle has also reached its natural conclusion. Nu Metal Agenda revealed that Slipknot plans to begin new writing sessions between late 2025 and mid-2026. This upcoming creative phase will potentially be influenced by their new drummer Eloy Casagrande, who joined the band earlier this year.
Crahan himself has indicated openness to exploring independent releases in the future. Loudwire noted that while new label deals remain possible, Crahan suggested that doing things “ourselves” would mean significantly more work but could ultimately benefit the band’s creative control and financial independence.
Additionally, fans have reason to anticipate new material beyond future albums. Loudwire confirmed that Slipknot’s long-anticipated Look Outside Your Window album, recorded years ago, has been handed over to management and is expected to be released at some point. This provides content during this transitional period.
