Slayer’s Kerry King Says Alice In Chains’ Layne Staley Was Such A ‘Superstar’
In the latest issue of Metal Hammer, Slayer‘s Kerry King shared his favorite Alice in Chains track and praised lead singer Layne Staley for being a legendary frontman.
Alice in Chains and Slayer crossed paths when both bands were a part of the Clash Of The Titans Tour. The two-leg tour saw Testament and Suicidal Tendencies in Europe as supporting acts and second co-headlined by Megadeth and Slayer to support their respective albums ‘Rust in Peace’ and ‘Seasons in the Abyss’ which Alice in Chains supported in the US.
The tour that brought together trash metal and the alternative rock and grunge scene became one of the most talked about tours in the history of heavy metal. The combined tour also allowed the biggest stars of the time to get to know each other, including Kerry King and Layne Staley.
Slayer’s Kerry King recalled their time together at tour when they were getting to know the sets of everyone. He heard Staley’s voice and enjoyed it so much that they watched the entire Alice in Chains set every night. King added that Layne was a superstar who captured the crowd’s attention. He mentioned ‘Them Bones’ as his favorite track from their ‘Dirt’ album, which has memorable melodies that made the band untouchable.
Kerry King’s words about Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley:
“‘Them Bones’ is such a great song – super-short, heavy, great video, and these haunting vocal melodies. Those dudes were untouchable on their first two records; they were really vibing as a band, and Layne was just a superstar. They played on the US 1990 package tour Clash Of The Titans, and on the first couple of dates, we’d be backstage going, ‘Who is that with that f*cking voice?’ And we started going out to watch the entire set every night. It was just one of those moments.”
