Sick Of It All frontman Lou Koller has died at the age of 59 following a long battle with an esophageal tumor. The band announced his passing on Instagram.
The band issued a heartfelt statement to their worldwide hardcore community, expressing their grief over the loss of their vocalist and brother.
“It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller,” the band said. “The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming.”
The statement went on to reflect on Koller’s legacy and the milestone the band had been approaching together.
“This year would have marked Sick Of It All’s 40th anniversary as a band, and Lou’s camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years,” they continued. “We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman. Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.”
The band also took a moment to acknowledge the outpouring of support Koller received during his illness.
“At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund,” they added. “You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years. His battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.”
Koller had been battling an esophageal tumor — specifically identified as adenocarcinoma — for the past two years. No further details regarding memorial plans have been announced at this time.
Sick Of It All was founded in 1986 in Queens, New York, by Lou Koller alongside his brother Pete Koller and drummer Armand Majidi. The band quickly became one of the most prominent acts in the New York hardcore scene. Their debut album, Blood, Sweat and No Tears, was released in 1989 and helped define the sound and ethos of the genre for a generation of fans.
The band remained active and relevant well into the following decades. Their most recent studio album, Wake the Sleeping Dragon!, was released in 2018. The band continued to tour extensively in the years that followed, a testament to Koller’s relentless dedication to the stage and to the hardcore community he helped build.
