Shinedown’s frontman Brent Smith recently opened up about his unconventional lifestyle choice. He explained why he sold his house and continues to live in hotels, in an interview with Kerrang.

The rock vocalist shared details about his decision to sell his California home. He embraced a nomadic lifestyle that has defined his personal approach to living.

“I had a home in California from 2010 to 2016, but I was inside maybe a total of six months,” Smith said. “I looked at this big empty house and realized that it really needed to go to a family. So I sold it and I’ve been living in hotels, without a mortgage ever since.”

Smith also reflected on his relationship with his late mother. He shared how she understood his lifestyle choices.

“I used to love calling up my mom, sitting in some rental car outside her house, and waiting until she’d ask when I’d be home next to ring the doorbell,” he continued. “This 40-year-old man always with a bag of laundry, coming home to wash his clothes.”

The singer shared how his mother would defend his unconventional living situation to others who questioned it.

“When people ask why I still live like this, I think of what my mom would say when she was alive. She gave birth to me. She raised me. She watched me grow up. She knew,” Smith explained. “People would ask, ‘What is he running from?’ She’d say, ‘He’s not running from anything. He’s running towards everything…’ And people would say, ‘He’s, like, homeless!’ She’d reply, ‘He’s not homeless. He’s home-free…'”

Smith’s hotel-based lifestyle makes more sense when considering the band’s demanding touring schedule and upcoming commitments.

95.9 The RAT reported that Shinedown has major tour plans running from May through November 2026. Smith revealed in a recent video message that the band is planning activities and appearances across that span. This shows the group’s busy schedule this year.

The band’s extensive touring commitments are further highlighted by their participation in major festival circuits. 95.9 The RAT confirmed that Shinedown is set for the 2026 “Rock the Country” festival tour. The lineup includes Kid Rock, Creed, Aaron Lewis of Staind, Jason Aldean, and Blake Shelton, among others.

The packed touring calendar is already taking shape with confirmed dates. Ticketmaster listed multiple 2026 Shinedown dates, starting with shows in May. The schedule includes stops like Austin, Texas, on May 22 and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on May 23. This confirms a packed touring calendar.

For Smith, this constant movement and performance schedule appears to align perfectly with his chosen lifestyle of living without the burden of maintaining a permanent residence. This allows him to focus entirely on the band’s music and connecting with fans across the country.
