Within Temptation singer Sharon den Adel is not afraid of receiving backlash.

Appearing in a new interview with Summa Inferno, the singer shared her thoughts about receiving criticism as a band. Within Temptation is known to publicly state their political ideas. During the interview, the rocker was asked whether or not she is afraid of the criticism the band might receive due to the public comments. Adel clarified with the following:

“Well, I believe in democracy. And I think also we have a voice, and I believe in debating. What I hope to do with this — we’re not lashing out or criticizing anything. It’s more like we try to keep the subject alive because just by talking about it, we can bring other people to new ideas or get a little bit deeper into the subject or start being interested in the subject and thinking about what is the right thing to do.”

Adel’s Thoughts On Democracy

The rocker openly clarified that the band has written lyrics for the wars both in Ukraine and Iran and is aware that voicing your concerns should not be a problem. She continued:

“What kind of world do we wanna live in? I think that’s a good question. So I’m not afraid of feeling attacked because of the fact that we take a certain point of view because I think… Well, I think it’s, that’s the thing of democracy. We can all be a voice and we can all contribute to the debate on what kind of world do you wanna live in and what do you accept from each other and what don’t we accept from each other.”

She continued by explaining how she wants not only individuals but also countries to support each other:

“There should be a certain pressure from other countries trying to help certain people in need. And I think it’s most important that we support those who are in oppression, who are oppressed, and to let them know there’s people thinking about them and supporting them.”

‘Politics Shouldn’t Be Kept Out Of Metal’

Despite having consistently been intertwined with politics, Whether or not politics should be excluded from metal has been a fundamental misconception of the genre. Bands such as Metallica and Black Sabbath have numerously stated their political ideas in their lyrics, and so did Within Temptation in their 2019 album, ‘Resist.’

The guitarist Robert Westerhold also shared his opinions about keeping politics out of metal, stating that it’s ‘not even politics’:

“What annoys me a lot is that people say, ‘Don’t talk about politics.’ It’s not even politics. It’s your opinion as an artist. Artists have opinions. That’s what art is for. That’s what makes it interesting.”
