System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian recently explained why the band hasn’t recorded new music in nearly two decades. He addressed the creative challenges in a statement shared on Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk.

Tankian clarified that the band’s recording hiatus stems from creative vision differences rather than personal conflicts between members.

“It’s not about everyone’s [gotta be] in line in terms of doing it. It’s gotta be everyone’s in line in terms of what they see as the next record,” Tankian said. “It’s not just, ‘I wanna do it, I wanna do it,’ that kind of a thing.”

The vocalist emphasized that the band’s relationships remain strong despite their creative differences.

“It’s more about, how do you envision the next record? If you don’t all envision it the same way, then it’s not worth doing,” he continued. “If you do envision it the same way, then it’s worth doing. That’s what I’m referring to. So it’s not about our relationships with each other, which are phenomenal and they’ve always been really good.”

Tankian stressed that the band members maintain mutual respect and love for one another.

“Our differences of opinion were always creative differences, which I am proud to say. They weren’t personal differences,” he explained. “We always loved and respected each other, and more than ever now. So, that’s not why we haven’t made a record.”

He concluded by noting that the band continues to collaborate in other ways while maintaining their artistic standards.

“We haven’t made a record because of a vision difference, and that’s an artistic difference,” Tankian said. “We do other stuff together. We’ll tour together, we’ll hang out, have dinner together and bring the family over, enjoy each other. We do other stuff together. It doesn’t have to be that one thing, unless we all agree on the same vision.”

Tankian’s recent comments provide insight into the band’s creative process and the challenges they face in moving forward with new material.

The band’s struggle with creative alignment has been an ongoing issue for years. MetalSucks reported that bassist Shavo Odadjian confirmed System of a Down has worked on new songs in recent years. However, they decided not to release them because they hadn’t reached a shared vision for the record. Odadjian expressed enthusiasm for releasing new music, noting that some material could have been an album already.

The band’s internal dynamics regarding touring have also played a role in their creative decisions. YouTube interviews revealed that Tankian mentioned touring felt repetitive at times and lacked creative inspiration for him. This contributed to his ambivalence about continuous touring. This perspective highlights the different approaches band members have toward their musical output and performance schedule.

Despite these creative differences, System of a Down continues to maintain their collaborative spirit in other areas. Music MxDwn noted that the band announced a comeback tour in 2025 with plans to perform in North and South America. Odadjian addressed their lengthier touring schedule while noting there’s no plan to do the rest of the world just yet.

The band’s approach to new material reflects their commitment to artistic integrity over commercial pressure. Noise11 indicated that System of a Down continues to consider their musical future carefully. This demonstrates that while the band members hold different views on recording, their personal bonds remain intact. They prioritize quality over quantity in their creative output.
