System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian recently revealed whether or not the band is done.
The frontman explained to The Sun why the band stopped doing full tours and have been making only a few shows at a time. “Not at this time, but it doesn’t mean that we won’t have one in the coming year or two years. It’s something that we would love to do,” he shared.
“I just stopped doing full tours for a combination of artistic reasons and health reasons. But single shows as events has been incredibly rewarding for us. We’re really enjoying it and each other in the process and it’s becoming special. I don’t foresee it. I definitely think we will be doing something. I just don’t know when,” the rocker added.
However, he did add that the band had some unreleased music and some of them were ‘amazing gems.’
About new music, the rocker said earlier that the band needed everyone to agree on the direction. He added that he shared some ideas with his bandmates, but not all of them were interested.
“I presented it — we call it a manifesto in the book almost half-jokingly, but bringing a manifesto to rock musicians is… [Laughs] I guess it doesn’t work — it doesn’t work. But I was trying to instill the same type of egalitarian principles as I love as an activist within whatever I do. And at that time, it didn’t work, but maybe it will one day. We’ll see,” he said.
The band has played only two live shows this year, both in the United States. They last performed in the UK seven years ago at Download Festival during their final world tour.
In late 2017, Tankian informed his System bandmates—Malakian, John Dolmayan, and Shavo Odadjian—that he no longer wanted to tour. He cited the repetitive nature of touring and the toll it took on his body.
Tankian has since undergone back surgery and states he is now in a much better physical condition.
