Saxon have released “Medusa,” the second single from their upcoming Gods of Thunder album, inspired by Greek mythology. The band shared details about the track and tour plans on YouTube.
The new single draws from the story of the Gorgon whose gaze could turn people to stone. Saxon have also announced major updates for their 2027 Gods of Thunder World Tour, including special guests and production details for European dates.
“THE MIGHTY SAXON UNLEASH ‘MEDUSA,’ the second single from upcoming Gods of Thunder album. Inspired by the terrifying Gorgon of Greek mythology, whose gaze could turn mortals to stone, ‘Medusa’ strikes with a killer riff and classic heavy metal power,” the band wrote in the video description.
“With Biff Byford’s unmistakable vocals leading the charge, Saxon bring the ancient legend roaring to life with a sound that hits like a bolt from the gods themselves,” the description continued.
Byford offered his own take on the track. “A step into the world of Greek mythology ‘Medusa’, a god who could turn you to stone with a glance! Epic metal, epic story! Enjoy,” he said.
The tour is taking shape with new dates and guest bands. “With ‘Medusa’ landing today, anticipation for Saxon’s forthcoming album and 2027 Gods of Thunder – World Tour is reaching fever pitch,” the band confirmed. The band have now revealed that legendary Los Angeles heavy metal veterans, Armored Saint, will join them as special guests for the UK and Ireland leg of the tour, bringing together two powerhouse names in heavy metal for an unmissable run of shows.”
“The excitement doesn’t stop there, with Saxon also announcing additional European dates for 2027 as the Gods of Thunder – World Tour continues to take shape,” they added. “Fans attending the Brussels, Zürich, Cologne and Tilburg shows can look forward to Saxon’s spectacular ‘Castles & Eagles’ production. The selected shows will feature the return of the band’s iconic eagle, measuring nine metres wide and spanning twelve metres with its wings fully extended, complete with landing lights and intense lighting effects as it soars above the band. Tickets available from https://www.saxon747.com/.”
“We’re bringing the gods of thunder tour across to Europe, it’s gonna be awesome! Can’t wait to open the heavens and bring on the metal,” Byford said.
These announcements mark the band’s major plans to support the Gods of Thunder album throughout 2027.
Gods of Thunder is Saxon’s 25th studio album, arriving on 22 January 2027 through Silver Lining Music. The record draws on history, fantasy, horror, ancient mythology, pagan rites and the enduring spirit of rock ‘n’ roll. The album was produced by Byford and mixed by longtime Saxon producer and Judas Priest touring guitarist Andy Sneap. The title track served as the album’s first single, and this is the second Saxon album to feature Diamond Head guitarist Brian Tatler, who joined the band as a touring guitarist in 2023.
The UK and Ireland tour with Armored Saint spans 11 shows, kicking off in Wolverhampton on 13 February and wrapping up in London on 27 February. A spring 2027 leg of the same package follows from 19 March in Austin, Texas, to 10 April in Las Vegas, with ONE MACHINE opening. Fans attending the Brussels, Zürich, Cologne and Tilburg shows can expect Saxon’s spectacular ‘Castles & Eagles’ production, featuring the band’s iconic eagle with its full wingspan and landing lights.
Byford has completed his chemotherapy after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in August 2025. The diagnosis forced Saxon to cancel a series of European dates, but the frontman finished treatment in October 2025 and is preparing to return to the stage. The Gods of Thunder album marks the band’s comeback following this difficult period in the singer’s life.
