Sammy Hagar Shows Off The Guitar That He Smashed While Opening For KISS
The Circle frontman Sammy Hagar shared a post on his official Instagram page revealing a picture in which he holds a Fender Stratocaster and unveiled that he destroyed that guitar into pieces during his performance as an opening act for KISS.
As many of you might remember, KISS performed at Madison Square Garden for the first time on February 18, 1977, just 3 short years after the release of their debut album which was named after the band. The place was sold out, with 19,626 fans waiting to see their spectacular show.
Sammy Hagar was the opening act for KISS’ performance and a fun fact about Hagar opening the show, his name was not even written on the bill since the decision about Hagar performing before KISS was a last-minute incident.
As Hagar recalled in his autobiography, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, the experience was unexpectedly started out as a disaster since the huge crowd was booing him as he was on stage before even starting to play. Hagar’s reaction happened to be smashing his guitar which he regretted later on since he destroyed a vintage guitar out of his anger.
Here is what Hagar said:
“I had never played New York except with Montrose. They didn’t even know me. I looked out and the whole place was dressed like Kiss. They’ve all got their makeup on. They were booing and flipping me off. ‘F- you,’ I said and dropped my pants, pulled out my d- and smashed my f-ing ’61 Stratocaster to pieces onstage. What an idiot. Demolished this vintage guitar and walked offstage. It was the worst experience I ever had on stage, and it ruined me in New York. They didn’t even know who I was. They hated me before they heard me.”
Recently, Sammy Hagar shared a post on his official Instagram page revealing a picture of that guitar he destroyed as he reminded his fans of that tragic yet funny incident. In addition to this, Hagar also revealed an old picture of himself which his fans appreciated since they got the opportunity to experience a throwback.
“Early Red Rocker getting down on that ’61 Strat in 1977!
That guitar is the one I smashed to pieces opening for Kiss at Madison Square Garden!”
