Former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar addressed a fan’s confusion over crowd size at his recent live show. He took a subtle jab at fellow Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth in a post shared on Instagram.

Hagar shared a video from his sold-out performance in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, celebrating the success of two back-to-back shows in the state. When a fan questioned whether the crowd was as large as claimed, Hagar was quick to set the record straight — and couldn’t resist a dig at Roth in the process.

“Two sold out shows in Michigan, Detroit, Mount Pleasant, the state rocks and everyone in it thank you, thank you,” Hagar wrote in the caption of his post.

A Van Halen fan then commented on the post, casting doubt on the turnout: “Didn’t look like that many people was there from others posts??”

Hagar responded directly to the skepticism, dismissing the confusion with a pointed remark.

“Sold out. It sold out,” Hagar replied. “You must’ve seen David Lee Roth post and got confused.”

The comment was a light jab at Roth, implying a contrast between the two former Van Halen singers’ respective crowd sizes. No further response from either party has been reported.

The exchange is the latest chapter in a long-running rivalry between the two men. It has played out publicly for decades and shows no signs of cooling down as both continue to tour in 2026.

Hagar launched his 2026 summer tour on June 13 with a hit-packed 19-song set in St. Louis. The set leaned heavily on Van Halen-era material. The Michigan dates followed shortly after, with both shows selling out and drawing strong reactions from fans across the state.

Roth has also been active on the road this summer, though on a noticeably smaller scale. His recent shows have taken place in club-sized venues, including a June 7 performance at The Paramount in Huntington, New York — a venue that holds fewer than 2,000 people. The contrast in venue sizes has not gone unnoticed among Van Halen fans, many of whom have been openly comparing the two singers’ current drawing power online.

The rivalry between Hagar and Roth stretches back to 1985, when Roth departed Van Halen and Hagar stepped in as his replacement. The two men have represented competing eras of the band ever since. Fans have long been divided over which version of Van Halen defined the group’s legacy. That divide has kept the comparison game alive well into their solo careers.

In 2002, Hagar and Roth announced a 21-city co-headlining tour billed as “Song For Song, The Heavy Weight Champs Of Rock And Roll.” It was a rare moment of collaboration between the two. That spirit of joint billing has long since given way to the kind of pointed social media exchanges that now define their public dynamic.
