Former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar recently opened up about how he maintains his voice quality at 78 years old while some of his peers struggle with voice issues. He shared his insights in an interview with The Express.
The rock icon discussed his approach to vocal maintenance and overall health. He credited a combination of genetics, lifestyle choices, and modern medical treatments for his continued performance ability.
“There’s a lot of luck and genes involved. I have good genes. I’ve still got muscles. I still can do everything I ever did. And I don’t know why and how, other than I take care of myself. I take supplements, I don’t take drugs,” Hagar said.
He elaborated on his specific health regimen, including cutting-edge treatments.
“I take things that stop my body from getting stiff – anti-inflammatories and vitamins, things that nutrition that you need in your body as you get older, your body stops producing it. I do stem cell therapy with an IV. I do it every six months. I put young stem cells in my body. And I feel the difference,” he continued.
Hagar also emphasized the importance of discipline in his daily routine and vocal practice.
“I don’t smoke and I don’t stay up later than I should. I just don’t abuse myself. And I sing all the time. I don’t really sing scales, I sing hard songs to sing. One of my favorite warm up songs is Whiter Shade Of Pale,” he explained. “It’s like the scales are tough. So when I have a hard time singing that, I’m going, ‘Oops, I need to work out a little bit more tomorrow and get ready for these shows.'”
The veteran rocker expressed admiration for peers who perform without extensive preparation.
“I know singers that don’t even practice and go on stage. Bruce Springsteen walks out there and sings. How the f*ck does he do that? anybody that can do that – God bless them,” Hagar concluded.
Hagar’s commitment to vocal excellence is evident in his current touring schedule. This demonstrates his ability to maintain the demanding performance standards he’s set for himself throughout his career.
Q95 iHeart reported that the rock legend is currently touring extensively with his 2026 “Best of All Worlds Tour,” produced by Live Nation and featuring special guest Rick Springfield. The tour includes a stop at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana on June 14, 2026. This showcases his continued ability to perform at major venues across the country.
The setlist for his current tour reflects his decades-spanning career and vocal versatility. Sonic Perspectives noted that the performances pull heavily from across his career catalog, featuring demanding tracks like “Why Can’t This Be Love,” “5150,” “Best Of Both Worlds,” and “I Can’t Drive 55.” These are songs that require the vocal stamina and range he maintains through his rigorous health regimen.
Hagar has also demonstrated his adaptability as a performer by making strategic adjustments to his touring approach. Louder Sound revealed that he recently revamped his UK tour dates to include more intimate, tech-driven venues. This shows his dedication to delivering quality performances across different settings while maintaining the high standards his fans expect.
The combination of his disciplined health approach, including the controversial stem cell treatments, and his continued active touring schedule provides a real-world demonstration of his vocal maintenance philosophy in action. His ability to perform these vocally demanding songs night after night at 78 years old serves as testament to the effectiveness of his comprehensive approach to health and vocal care.
