Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal recently opened up about his decision to join Guns N’ Roses. He explained why he was initially hesitant to accept their offer during an interview on The Rock N’ Roll & Coffee Show.

The guitarist addressed his reluctance when asked directly about his feelings toward the opportunity to join the iconic rock band.

When asked “Was joining Guns N’ Roses something you wanted to do when you got that offer or was it were you a little hesitant at first?”, Thal provided insight into his mindset at the time.

“I was hesitant. I had a very full life and I was happy with everything I was doing and everything I was doing was on an incline,” Thal said.

He elaborated on the successful trajectory of his career at that point. He explained the various projects he would have had to abandon.

“I went from you know teaching locally to becoming a professor at Sunni Purchase College teaching music production. The producing this studio was filled with bands busy making music for TV shows that was going and going my own solo tours. I had my own record label and distributors around the world and the touring was getting bigger and bigger and everything was on the incline and I was happy,” he continued.

Thal emphasized the difficulty of the decision. He noted what he would be sacrificing.

“I was complete and I would have been giving all of that up. So, it was a tough decision. And I tried my best to to balance it and when we weren’t busy I would put out more albums and produce more artists and try and get back to everything and get that momentum back,” he said.

Despite his initial hesitation, Thal’s eventual decision to join the band would mark the beginning of a significant chapter in both his career and Guns N’ Roses history.

Guitar World reported that Joe Satriani recommended Thal for the position after Axl Rose expressed interest in finding “the craziest guitar player ever” to join the band. This recommendation from one of guitar’s most respected virtuosos speaks to Thal’s exceptional abilities and unique playing style that caught the attention of industry legends.

Thal ultimately joined Guns N’ Roses in 2006. This marked the beginning of what would become an eight-year tenure with the legendary rock band. Blabbermouth noted that he appeared on the band’s highly anticipated 2008 album “Chinese Democracy,” which had been in development for over a decade before its release.

During his time with the band, Glide Magazine documented that Thal performed at the band’s two Las Vegas residencies in 2012 and 2014. He helped to maintain Guns N’ Roses’ presence in the live music scene during a period of significant transition for the group.

The guitarist’s comments shed light on the personal and professional considerations that influenced his decision to join one of rock’s most famous bands. This ultimately led to a successful collaboration that lasted nearly a decade before he departed to focus on other creative pursuits.
