Roger Waters Slams U2’s Bono Over His ‘Shitty’ Poem

Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters recently posted a tweet and slammed U2 frontman Bono over the poem he sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon.
The White House celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday with several events prevented by the pandemic last year. President Joe Biden, who also has Irish heritage, virtually met with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in the Oval Office. Martin would attend the annual Friends of Ireland Luncheon at the Capitol, but he couldn’t as he was tested positive.
During the St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a long-time U2 fan and a good friend of Bono, read a poem written by the U2 frontman. The poem was about both Irish mythology and also the crisis in Ukraine. It referred to the banishment of snakes from Ireland and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Bono showed his support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his work as well.
The poem written by Bono follows:
“Oh, St Patrick he drove out the snakes
With his prayers but that’s not all it takes
For the snake symbolizes
An evil that rises
And hides in your heart, as it breaks
And the evil has risen my friends
From the darkness that lives in some men
But in sorrow and fear
That’s when saints can appear
To drive out those old snakes once again
And they struggle for us to be free
From the psycho in this human family
Ireland’s sorrow and pain
Is now the Ukraine
And St Patrick’s name now Zelenskiy.”
Bono’s poem, read by Pelosi, received a great deal of attraction from the media. Roger Waters also harshly shared his views on the poem on his Twitter account. Waters referred to both Bono and Nancy Pelosi as ‘eejit,’ an Irish slang word for ‘idiot.’ He also reminded Bono’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2019. Bono praised capitalism for rescuing people from poverty. Waters probably found Bono’s attitude on both issues as two-faced and, thus, severely criticized him. For him, making that speech at Davos and then sending this poem don’t match.
Roger Waters’ Twitter post read:
“Isn’t it enough that the eejit Bono goes and hobnobs with the oligarchs at Davos every year without getting the eejit Nancy Pelosi to foist his shitty poem on us?”
