Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist DJ Ashba recently joined Antihero Magazine for an interview during which he talked about his time back in the band. He stated that when Slash decided to rejoin the band, Axl Rose still wanted him to stay on board.

As you may recall, DJ Ashba joined Guns N’ Roses as the lead guitarist in 2009 to replace Robin Finck. His first tour with the band was ‘Chinese Democracy Tour,’ and then, he continued to play with them for the next five years. Besides Guns N’ Roses, Ashba was also active in Sixx: A.M., so in 2015, he announced that he was leaving the band to spend more time with his family and his other band.

Slash left Guns N’ Roses in 1996 primarily due to his personal problems with Axl Rose and their creative differences. Later on, in 2015,  it was announced that Slash would rejoin the band when Ashba left the band. The former band member Duff McKagan also rejoined, and then, Guns N’ Roses embarked on the ‘Not in This Lifetime…Tour.’

The interviewer asked DJ Ashba whether he felt happy or disappointed when Slash returned. Ashba replied that it was great news as he is a big fan of the band. Axl Rose wanted him to stay on board, but DJ Ashba said that he was just there to fill Slash’s gap, and if he returned, he wouldn’t need to continue in GN’R. Ashba added that playing with Guns N’ Roses was a great experience, but he also needed to create his own path.

During the interview, DJ Ashba said the following:

“Absolutely not. Actually, Axl wanted me to stay on board, and it’s one of those things where I was playing most of the Slash parts, and if he was coming back, that was great news for me as a fan and even better news for me as a musician because it was never my band. I was just basically filling in till the big guy came back.

But it allowed me to really experience a band on a level like no other, and I learned a lot of stuff about performing live on that magnitude to me; it was great news because I was going to go off and do what I’m doing now and that was to create and carve my own path. I’ve always been a big, big believer in not following in people’s footsteps, and I get more pride and joy, even if this thing never gets to that level, at least I’m cutting my own path and doing something really unique and to me as an artist that’s awesome.”

DJ Ashba has also been continuing with his solo project these days. He released his new single named ‘Bella Ciao’ on October 29, 2021. Ashba reinterpreted the Italian folk classic and turned it into a modern-day cover by incorporating electronic sounds to it.
