Queen drummer Roger Taylor has discussed the band’s partnership with Adam Lambert and whether new music with the singer is planned, in an interview with LouderSound.
Taylor was asked directly if the partnership with Lambert is over. He explained the history of their time together and his feelings about working with the vocalist.
Question: “Is your partnership with Adam Lambert over?”
“I wouldn’t close the door, no,” Taylor said. “We were with him for ten years, out touring with Adam. It was very, very successful and very satisfying.”
“I really enjoyed working with him. He’s a very unselfish performer, and boy can he sing. He’s got the most amazing natural gift. And he never tried to be Freddie.”
“We never really finished anything with Adam, which is to my regret, because I am a huge admirer of his voice. I think we could have done good stuff, but he’s doing lots of other things, and it didn’t really work out in the end.”
Taylor made these comments while discussing Queen’s work with Lambert and the possibility of new material with the singer. The drummer’s remarks offer insight into how the band views its decade-long collaboration with Lambert.
The Queen and Adam Lambert partnership began in 2009 when May and Taylor appeared on American Idol when Lambert was a contestant. They started performing occasionally in 2011 and conducted a short European tour in 2012. In 2014 they announced a world tour with international dates across North America, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe and South America. The most recent global tour concluded in Tokyo Dome on 14 February 2024, after Lambert decided to pursue his theatrical side by starring in Cabaret on Broadway from September 2024 to March 2025.
Lambert has maintained a solo career alongside his work with Queen. He announced the release date for his sixth solo studio album, with ADAM due out on July 10. As for his plans beyond his theatrical commitments, Lambert revealed that there was nothing happening at the moment with Queen as the band were all taking time away from writing new music.
Taylor has indicated openness to future studio work with Queen. He told another outlet that he and co-founder Brian May had recently discussed a possible return to the studio, saying that if they felt they had good material, they would consider it. Queen has not released an album of new material in more than 15 years, making any future recording a significant event for the legendary band.
