Rick Allen Names The Real Heroes Behind Def Leppard’s Success

Def Leppard is currently on their world tour and the band members started a new vlog series from their YouTube page, titled ‘Behind The World Tour,’ where they talk about the preparations they make, how the concert went and they also tell their memories. In the ‘Syracuse & Columbus’ episode, frontman Joe Elliott mentioned that they in fact celebrated a milestone in Def Leppard’s career during the tour:

“The fact that forty-four years ago today we signed our record deal. Which means forty-four years ago yesterday, we saw Led Zeppelin at Knebworth, and the record deal was signed in Rick Allen’s parents’ kitchen because he was fifteen. He wasn’t old enough to sign one himself.”

In the video, Rick Allen confirmed Elliott’s remarks, and emphasised the importance of his parents’ support:

“Yes, so forty-four years ago we signed our first record deal in my mum and dad’s kitchen. And done thing I’m sure most people know these days is how supportive our parents were of this band and of all of us. Having just that support as really, we wouldn’t be doing what we’re doing now. I mean, we were beside it ourselves, you know, getting that first record deal, I mean it’s unheard of. Not too many people get to do that. So, thank you parents and thank you all for sticking with and being so loyal, thank you.”

Allen previously talked about how his parents affected his musical career. In a 2020 interview, he mentioned that his parents advised him to drop out of school to focus on Def Leppard right after they signed their first record deal. In a separate interview, he talked about how he started playing the drums, and his parents’ encouraging behaviours:

“I asked my parents for a drum kit, and they said they couldn’t afford it. But a week later, they said if I did jobs around the house, they’d buy me one on layaway. The stipulation was I had to go for drum lessons. It felt natural for me to sit behind a drum kit, and I took it up immediately. [Their advice was] ‘Be yourself, just really believe in yourself.’ They believed in me, and I was very lucky to have parents who were so supportive.”

Def Leppard are currently concluded the third leg of their world tour and they will hit the road again for Japan and Australia on November 3 until November 14.
