Skid Row bassist Rachel Bolan recently discussed the band’s ongoing search for a new singer. He explained the deliberate approach they’re taking to find the right fit. His comments were shared in an interview with 101 WRIF.
Bolan addressed why the band is not rushing their decision. He provided insight into their current process and creative activities.
“We’re still looking. We’re taking our time. But Snake [guitarist Dave Sabo] and I do get together and write [new Skid Row music]. We just wrote a little bit today, as a matter of fact. He just left [my house] about 10 minutes ago,” Bolan said.
The bassist emphasized the band’s commitment to finding the right candidate while maintaining their creative momentum.
“So, yeah, we just keep the machine rolling, and when we find someone, we’ll find someone. But we’re not gonna rush it. We did this promotion through Sweetwater and probably have listened to about 300 submissions at this point,” he continued.
Bolan noted the quality of submissions they’ve received. He also discussed their thorough evaluation process.
“And there’s some really good stuff on there. And, we’ve auditioned people outside of that as well that were really good. So, it’s a long process, and were prepared for it,” he added.
The band’s methodical approach to finding their next vocalist reflects the significant changes they’ve experienced in recent years. It also shows their determination to make the right choice for their future.
The current search follows the departure of singer Erik Grönwall in 2022. Grönwall left the band due to health complications related to his previous double lung transplant. Grönwall had joined Skid Row in 2022 as their vocalist. However, his medical condition ultimately made it impossible for him to continue with the demanding schedule of a touring rock band.
The scale of interest in the vocalist position has been substantial. The band’s partnership with Sweetwater Music has generated an overwhelming response from aspiring singers worldwide. While Bolan mentioned reviewing about 300 submissions in his recent interview, the total number of applications received through their promotion has actually exceeded 3,000 candidates as of early 2024.
This extensive search process demonstrates both the global appeal of joining the legendary metal band. It also shows the challenge of finding someone who can fill the vocal duties for a group with such a storied history. The band has been without a permanent vocalist for nearly two years. Yet they remain committed to taking the time necessary to find the right fit.
Despite the lengthy search, no official announcement regarding a new singer has been made as of mid-2024. The band continues to balance their search efforts with ongoing creative work. This is evidenced by Bolan’s comments about continuing to write new material with guitarist Dave Sabo while they evaluate potential candidates.
