Skid Row’s Rachel Bolan recently addressed whether the band would consider using an AI singer during their ongoing search for a new vocalist. He shared his thoughts in an interview on Appetite for Distortion.
The bassist was asked directly about the possibility of using artificial intelligence technology for vocals, similar to how KISS plans to continue with avatars.
When asked about potentially using an AI singer during the band’s publicized search for a lead vocalist, Bolan was clear in his response.
“I couldn’t in good conscious go out and do that. We don’t even use backup tracks,” Bolan said. “We’re still one of those bands that don’t even use backup tracks.”
He emphasized the band’s commitment to authentic live performance. He explained their philosophy on maintaining genuine musical integrity.
“So if we sing like shit we sing like shit, you know? It’s just one of those things,” he continued. “I couldn’t I am so anti-AI in music. It’s just until they get a rain it in a little bit, but I couldn’t go out with um a fake singer. I need to have that real connection with who’s ever there, you know?”
Bolan’s stance against artificial intelligence in music reflects the band’s broader approach to finding their next permanent vocalist. The comments come as Skid Row continues an extensive worldwide search for a new lead singer.
Blabbermouth reported that the band has partnered with Sweetwater for their vocalist search. The collaboration has already yielded over 300 audition submissions plus 20 industry connections. Despite the volume of applications, Bolan emphasized the importance of taking time to find the right fit rather than rushing the process.
The band has been without a permanent vocalist since Erik Grönwall’s departure in 2024 due to health issues. This marks their sixth singer since Sebastian Bach left the group. Ultimate Classic Rock noted that Skid Row hasn’t toured in nearly two years—their longest break since reactivating in 1999. This gives them “the luxury of time” without booked tours or recording deadlines.
“We’re taking our time,” Bolan stated in recent interviews. He rejected ideas of using album-specific singers or rotating vocalists. He noted that such arrangements “would stress me out” after dealing with multiple vocalist changes over the years. The bassist insisted that finding someone who fits their touring and creative process takes priority over quick fixes.
Despite the ongoing search, the band’s creative momentum continues unabated. Apple Podcasts revealed that Bolan and guitarist Snake are actively writing new material. The bassist noted they’re “piling up songs” until the right person joins. Bolan has also been keeping busy with his solo album “Gargoyle of the Garden State.” He maintains what he calls “the machine rolling” while carefully vetting candidates.
