Phil Collen Considers Billy Idol Criminally ‘Underrated’

Def Leppard’s Phil Collen recently shared his 80s mixtape during his interview with Louder Sound. The rocker referred to the songs in the mixtape as what inspired him to be a musician in the 80s.

Collen included Billy Idol’s ‘Eyes Without A Face’ in his mixtape and referred to Idol as underrated. He said of the Generation X singer:

“Billy Idol was the punk Elvis, and I loved him for it. He was a massive star, but I think he should have been even bigger. He was great with Generation X, but when he went solo and got Steve Stevens as his guitarist, the stars aligned.”

Collen then shared his thoughts on the song:

“For me, ‘Eyes Without A Face’ really sums up that early MTV era – a great song and a great performance. That’s when Billy was a total superstar. All the women loved him, and all the guys wanted to be like him. Well, some of us did!”

In the rocker’s list, David Bowie, whom he was inspired by during his music career, took place too.

In 2008, Def Leppard came together for a tour with Billy Idol as the band’s supporting act. Now, the band will embark on a world tour, which is to start in Japan on November 3 and wrap up in Australia on November 14.
