Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks have reunited at Real World Studios to work on the 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition of “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.” The reunion was announced on the Genesis band official Instagram account.

The former Genesis bandmates collaborated on overseeing the Dolby Atmos mix of the classic album. This marks a significant reunion five decades after Gabriel’s departure from the band.

“It was an interesting experience to be back again inside the world we built 50 years ago for The Lamb,” Gabriel said. “Bob (Mackenzie) did a brilliant job bringing it into Atmos and it was good to be back in the mixing chairs with Tony.”

Gabriel reflected on how both musicians have evolved over the years. He noted their changed approach to collaboration.

“It brought back many good memories of being in a band,” he continued. “We were still wearing our ‘More Me’ T-shirts, however, we have both matured enough to (very) occasionally ask for ‘Less Me’ – would never have happened 50 years ago.”

Banks also shared his thoughts on the reunion experience.

“Great to have a chance to work with my old friend on something from our youth, and relive some of the moments we had when recording these pieces,” Banks said. “Still sound fresh to me!”

This collaboration holds particular significance given the complex history between Gabriel and his former bandmates since his departure in 1975.

Parade reported that Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 after creative tensions and his desire to spend time with his family. He launched a successful solo career that would span decades. The departure marked the end of an era for the progressive rock pioneers who had co-founded the band in 1967.

Genesis continued without Gabriel and achieved massive commercial success. However, opportunities for collaboration between the original members remained scarce. Good.is noted that one notable exception occurred in 1982 when Gabriel briefly rejoined the band for a benefit concert to help alleviate his financial troubles at the time.

Despite occasional rumors and speculation about full reunions over the years, sustained creative collaborations like this studio work have been extremely rare. Ultimate Classic Rock revealed that other recent Genesis reunions featured Collins, Banks, and Rutherford without Gabriel. This project represents a notable exception that brings Gabriel back into the creative fold.

The current reunion for “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” anniversary edition demonstrates that despite the passage of time and separate career paths, the musical bond between these founding Genesis members remains strong enough to revisit their shared artistic legacy.
