Former Morbid Angel drummer Pete Sandoval recently addressed longstanding misconceptions surrounding his departure from the band, issuing a statement on Facebook.

The statement focused on clarifying inaccurate information about why he left the influential death metal band, particularly disputing claims that religious reasons were behind his departure.

“Just a small clarification, because some of the information being shared about why I left Morbid Angel is just NOT ACCURATE,” Sandoval said. “I did not leave Morbid Angel in 2013 for religious reasons.”

He explained the actual timeline and circumstances of his departure from the band.

“I left once, in 2010, due to my back surgery,” he continued. “That was the only departure. Morbid Angel released their 2011 record with their new drummer, and at that point it was clear the band had moved in a different musical direction than my own style. But the real reason I didn’t rejoin later when I was invited back was much simpler and more personal: I wasn’t physically or mentally ready to play the songs at the level I expect from myself.”

Sandoval revealed the personal struggles he faced during his recovery period.

“After my surgery, it took me many years to regain my strength, stamina, and confidence,” he said. “For someone who already struggles with communication and self-expression, it was easier at the time to give a short explanation (Due my beliefs) than to admit how difficult that period really was.”

He concluded by emphasizing that his current musical activities contradict the religious departure narrative.

“If faith was truly the reason, I obviously wouldn’t be playing these same songs today,” Sandoval stated. “The truth is, it took me nearly 12 years to feel capable again.”

Sandoval’s clarification sheds new light on one of death metal’s most significant lineup changes. The change involved a drummer whose contributions helped define the genre’s sound and technical standards.

Encyclopaedia Metallum noted that Sandoval first joined Morbid Angel in the late 1980s, bringing technical brilliance to albums like Altars of Madness. His relentless drumming, superb fills, and proto-blastbeats elevated the band’s brutality. His drumming style became a cornerstone of the band’s sound during their most influential period.

The drummer’s departure in 2010 marked the end of an era for Morbid Angel. Sandoval had been instrumental in shaping their signature sound across multiple classic albums. His technical prowess and innovative approach to extreme metal drumming influenced countless musicians in the death metal scene.

Beyond the physical challenges he faced, Sandoval has also been open about personal struggles that affected his ability to communicate effectively. Arrow Lords of Metal reported that the drummer has publicly discussed his autism diagnosis, which impacts his communication and self-expression abilities.

Despite the challenges that led to his departure from Morbid Angel, Sandoval has remained active in the extreme metal scene. He currently performs with bands like I Am Morbid and Terrorizer, continuing to play the same intense material that made him famous. This directly contradicts the narrative that religious beliefs drove him away from the music.
