The new book ‘Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock’s Wildest Festival’ features revelations from Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro about performing while intoxicated at a Jane’s Addiction show. People Magazine reported these details from the publication.
“I thought we were off the stage. I didn’t know that we were on the stage,” Farrell admitted. “I don’t feel good about that at all. That was a stupid thing to do, and I really regret it.”
Navarro detailed his experience from the same performance. “I was really wanting to get clean, but it was really hard on that tour,” he said. “I had gotten too high on heroin and couldn’t really get up. So then I was given cocaine. I took a handful of pills and drank a bunch. By the time I got onstage, I didn’t know which way was up.”
The newly published book chronicles untold stories behind the legendary alternative rock festival.
Both musicians’ admissions reflect a broader pattern of substance abuse issues throughout the band’s history.
Grunge revealed insights into the band’s private struggles. Navarro later explained: “What’s unusual is that we never talked about it. I know that I went home and slammed a bunch of coke and heroin, and I know those guys did too, and we never picked up a phone again.”
The band’s struggles continue to affect their recent performances. Loudwire documented Jane’s Addiction’s September 2024 reunion tour cancellation. The decision came after an on-stage altercation between Farrell and Navarro during a Boston show.
Ultimate Classic Rock shared insights from Farrell’s wife, Etty. She explained that technical issues often intensified his volatile behavior during performances. Loud stage volumes and audience heckling contributed to these challenges.
The band’s past struggles with substance abuse continue to shape their present-day dynamics. These events highlight the lasting impact on one of alternative rock’s most influential bands.
