KISS frontman Paul Stanley’s birthday tribute to drummer Eric Singer has generated controversy among fans who believe it diminishes the legacy of original drummer Peter Criss. The controversy stems from a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Stanley’s celebratory message praised Singer’s long-standing contribution to the band and his role as KISS’s heartbeat for over three decades.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIC!!!! You have been my ROCK for 38 years and the heartbeat of KISS for over 33,” Stanley said. “We couldn’t have done it without you and you are loved by millions. More to do! Enjoy this day. You deserve it!”

However, the tribute prompted pushback from longtime KISS fans who felt the post overlooked Peter Criss’s foundational role in the band.

One fan responded to Stanley’s post, stating: “I’m sorry but Peter Chris was the original drummer and will always be. He’s was one of the original cast of KISS. I grew up in this era.”

Another fan expressed similar sentiments while acknowledging both drummers’ contributions.

“Love you Paul, and God Bless Eric, but he ain’t our beloved Peter ‘The Catman’ Criss,” the fan commented.

The reaction highlights the ongoing tension among KISS fans regarding the band’s lineup changes and the legacy of its founding members.

The controversy stems from Singer’s complex history with the band and his eventual adoption of Criss’s iconic persona. Wikipedia reported that Singer first joined KISS in December 1991 after the death of previous drummer Eric Carr. This marked his initial replacement role in the band’s evolving lineup.

Singer’s relationship with Stanley predates his KISS membership by several months. Classic Rock Revisited noted that Singer was chosen to play drums for Paul Stanley’s solo band in 1991. This led to his audition and eventual selection as KISS drummer following Carr’s death.

The most contentious aspect of Singer’s tenure came when he adopted Peter Criss’s “Catman” makeup and persona. Ultimate Classic Rock documented that Singer performed as KISS’s drummer across three stints from 1991–1996, 2001–2002, and 2004–2023. His first performance wearing the “Catman” makeup occurred at a March 9, 2001 show.

This decision to have Singer wear Criss’s makeup sparked significant controversy among fans who viewed it as disrespectful to the original founding member’s legacy. The ongoing debate reflects deeper divisions within the KISS fanbase about authenticity, legacy, and the band’s numerous lineup changes throughout its five-decade career.
