Skid Row guitarist Dave Sabo recently made an appearance on BBC’s Rock Show with Johnie Walker, recalled seeing KISS live for the first time, and discussed why he chose Paul Stanley as his rock god.
KISS surely had been a prominent figure when it comes down to theatrical shows, always managing to enhance audiences with their stage-on personalities and antics. So, when a young Dave got to see the band in the 70s, along with his ‘buddy’ Jon Bon Jovi, the guitarist couldn’t help but admire Stanley and his bandmates.
The act excelled in impressing the audience, drawing all their attention to them, and ultimately becoming ‘rock gods’ on stage. Sabo recalled how the gig fascinated him, noting he had been obsessed with the act ever since. So, there was no wonder why he chose Stanley as his rock god, firmly stating that the singer wrote the book of being a top-notch stage performer.
Dave’s words on declaring Paul as his rock hero:
“My first concert ever was KISS at Madison Square Garden, December 16th, 1977. I was traveling with my buddy Jon Bon Jovi, and we went into that concert, and I walked out a completely changed person. It actually altered my life. And I’ve been obsessed with KISS ever since.
In the year 2000, Skid Row had the opportunity to tour the United States with KISS, and it was the culmination of a lifelong dream. Paul Stanley wrote the book on what a rock god should be.”
When it comes to picking a rock hero, we all surely have our favorites. Sabo’s pick when it comes to choosing the ultimate rock icon was KISS singer and co-founder Paul Stanley, declaring that he and his act changed his life and paved the way for what a model rock icon should be.
